The Qatar Press Center condemns the assassination of journalist Omar Al-Diraoui and photographer Hassan Al-Qishawi

Doha - January 3, 2024:

The Qatar Press Center condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of journalist Omar Al-Diraoui and eight others, following an airstrike on his family's home in the town of Al-Zawayda in central Gaza Strip early this morning, and the assassination of photojournalist Hassan Al-Qishawi, who was targeted by an Israeli drone missile west of Gaza City yesterday evening. This brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on October 7 to 203.

The Center condemns the continued assassination of journalists and media professionals by the Israeli occupation forces, in flagrant violation of international law, by bombing their locations and residences to silence the free media and prevent it from conveying the truth to the world.

The Center calls on the international community and UN, human rights, and media organizations to condemn the targeting of journalists and their families in Gaza through killing, arrest, and intimidation, and to take urgent action. To hold the Israeli occupation accountable before international courts for its war crimes against journalists and media professionals, and to pressure it to halt its crimes of genocide and the assassination of Palestinian journalists.

The Center expresses its astonishment at the continued international silence of UN, human rights, and media organizations regarding the deliberate and systematic targeting of journalists and media professionals in Gaza.

The Center calls on the international community to pressure Israel to release journalists detained in Israeli prisons, who are suffering from dire conditions that deny them the most basic rights of prisoners, as stipulated in international laws and conventions.

Journalist Omar Al-Diraoui had performed the funeral prayer for his brother the day before his martyrdom, before joining him with his father, mother, and siblings in the central Gaza Strip. By killing and disappearing journalists, Israel seeks to monopolize the narrative. It does not want the world to see the crimes it is committing against the Palestinian people, while preventing international press crews from accessing Gaza and covering the war of extermination. This is all part of a comprehensive process of genocide and other international crimes, through which it is attempting to perpetuate a second Nakba against the 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip for more than a year.

Since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, journalists have been subjected to continuous Israeli persecution, which constitutes a clear violation of international law. This is an attempt by the occupation to silence them and prevent them from conveying the truth about what is happening in the Gaza Strip to the world.

Over the past months, human rights and international organizations, as well as journalistic investigations, have called for strict measures to prevent the ongoing attacks and deliberate targeting of journalists. They have also emphasized the need to criminalize such crimes and impose sanctions on those responsible. However, this has not happened.

المركز القطري للصحافة يدين اغتيال الصحفي عمر الديراوي والمصور حسن القيشاوي

يدين المركز القطري للصحافة بأشد العبارات اغتيال الصحفي عمر الديراوي، و8 آخرين، إثر غارة جوية على منزل أسرته في بلدة الزوايدة وسط قطاع غزة فجر اليوم، واغتيال المصور الصحفي حسن القيشاوي، إثر استهدافه بصاروخ من مسيّرة إسرائيلية غربي مدينة غزة مساء أمس، ليصل عدد الشهداء الصحفيين في غزة منذ بداية العدوان الإسرائيلي في 7 أكتوبر وحتى الآن إلى 203 من الصحفيين والصحفيات.

ويستنكر المركز مواصلة قوات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي، في انتهاك صارخ للقانون الدولي، اغتيال الصحفيين والإعلاميين، عبر قصف مواقع تمركزهم وأماكن سكنهم، لإسكات الإعلام الحُر، ومنعه من نقل الحقيقة للعالم.

ويطالب المركز المجتمع الدولي والمنظمات الأممية والحقوقية والإعلامية بإدانة استهداف الصحفيين وذويهم في غزة بالقتل والاعتقال والترهيب، والتحرك العاجل؛ لمحاسبة الاحتلال الإسرائيلي أمام المحاكم الدولية، على جرائم الحرب ضد الصحفيين والإعلاميين، والضغط عليه؛ لوقف جرائم الإبادة الجماعية، ووقف اغتيال الصحفيين الفلسطينيين.

ويعرب المركز عن استغرابه من استمرار الصمت الدولي للمنظمات الأممية والحقوقية والإعلامية إزاء الاستهداف المتعمد والممنهج للصحفيين والإعلاميين في غزة.
ويدعو المركزُ المجتمعَ الدولي للضغط على إسرائيل لإطلاق سراح الصحفيين المعتقلين في السجون الإسرائيلية، الذين يعانون ظروفًا قاهرة تحرمهم من أبسط حقوق الأسرى، التي نصت عليها القوانين والمواثيق الدولية.

كان الصحفي عمر الديراوي قد صلى صلاة الجنازة قبل استشهاده بيوم، على شقيقه، قبل أن يلتحق به مع والده ووالدته وإخوته وسط قطاع غزة.
وتسعى إسرائيل عبر قتل الصحفيين وتغييبهم إلى احتكار الرواية، حيث لا تريد أن يرى العالم الجرائم التي ترتكبها بحق الشعب الفلسطيني، في وقت تمنع فيه الطواقم الصحفية الدولية من الوصول إلى غزة وتغطية حرب الإبادة، وكل ذلك في إطار عملية شاملة تمارس فيها الإبادة الجماعية، ومجموعة جرائم دولية أخرى تحاول من خلالها ترسيخ نكبة ثانية ضد 2.3 مليون فلسطيني في قطاع غزة منذ أكثر من عام. 

ومنذ بداية العدوان الإسرائيلي على قطاع غزة، يتعرض الصحفيون لملاحقة إسرائيلية مستمرة، تشكل انتهاكًا واضحًا للقوانين الدولية؛ في محاولة من الاحتلال لإسكاتهم ومنعهم من نقل حقائق ما يجري في قطاع غزة إلى العالم.
وعلى مدار شهور مضت، طالبت مؤسسات حقوقية ودولية وتحقيقات صحفية، بضرورة اتخاذ تدابير صارمة تمنع الاعتداءات المستمرة والاستهداف المتعمد للصحفيين، كما شددت على ضرورة تجريم مثل هذه الجرائم، وفرض عقوبات على المسؤولين عنها، لكن ذلك لم يحدث.
