Airwars assessment

Up to one civilian was reported injured after alleged Russian and/or Syrian airstrikes or artillery shelling on the city of Andan in the northern countryside of Aleppo on February 6, 2020.

Regarding civilian harm, Smart News reported that according to Civil Defence journalist Hamzah al-Youssef “(…) a civilian was injured as a result of an artillery shelling that targeted the city of Andan (…)”. Bawaba Aleppo also said that one civilian sustained injuries during the attack. However, the Syrian Violence Documentation Center stated that raids with missiles from Russian warplanes and with barrel bombs of the Syrian government forces’ helicopters targeted multiple cities, including andan on Thursday, February 6, 2020 without any injuries. Similarly, Jisr TV reported that the air raids of Russian and Regime forces on Andan only resulted in material losses.

Many sources mentioned damage to civilian objects. SCD Aleppo reported that “artillery bombardments by the regime forces on Andan [caused] extensive damage and destruction to residential houses and the medical point in the city.” Similarly, @HalabTodayTV said that “Andan Health Center is out of service after being subjected to artillery shelling by the regime forces.” This was also reported by Baladi News Network. The Syrian Network for Human Rights stated that the Regime fired an artillery shell near Anadan High School in Anadan city, partially damaging its building and furniture.

Sources were conflicted as to who was responsible for the strike with Anadolu Agency attributing the attack to Russia, while SNHR and SCD Aleppo referred to Regime forces as having carried out the strike. Bawaba Aleppo initially quoted Smart News saying that Regime forces stationed in the suburb of Al-Zahraa Association west of Aleppo carried out artillery strikes on Andan, though they later reported that Russia had launched the airstrikes on Andan. VDC Syria claimed that both Russian warplanes and Regime helicopters with barrel bombs attacked the city of Andan, however they consolidated the incident into a larger report of strikes across various cities and towns.

The incident allegedly took place on Thursday morning. The exact local time of the incident is unknown.

The incident occured in the morning.

One man his wife were killed and four children injured in an alleged Syrian regime or Russian artillery strikes on the night of February 4th to February 5th, 2020, according to local sources.

The Syrian Civil Defence reported that “Mr. Ahmad Rostom was killed and his family – his wife and four children were injured – due to artillery shelling by the regime forces, which targeted their house in the town of Ainjara in Aleppo countryside, at midnight on Tuesday”.

However, Step News Agency later reported that one of the injured women died on February 5th as the result of her wounds. @Step_Agency said: “A woman was killed in a missile attack by the Syrian regime forces yesterday night in the town of Ainjara”.

Several sources reported the strike took place at midnight.

@Shahbapress said Syrian regime forces used artillery and rocket launchers  to shell the town.

Activists from Aleppo told Khobar 24 that a gunman from a Turkish-backed faction was also killed in the strike. Activists reportedly told the source that Russian and Syrian warplanes carried out more than 60 airstrikes on the southern and western countryside of Aleppo.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights said Syrian regime forces’ fired artillery that struck Talhah Bin Obiadallah Mosque in the west of Einjara village partially destroying the building and damaging furniture.

Whereas some sources stated the artillery strikes were carried out by the Syrian regime, other sources did not specify a belligerent. Shaam News Network blamed both the Syrian regime and Russia. Due to Russia being an active belligerent in the area, Airwars has graded this incident as contested.

Airwars assessment

Two civilians were killed and twelve others, among which five children, were reportedly injured in alleged YPG artillery strikes on two schools in Afrin city on February 4th, 2020, according to local sources.

Shabha Press reported that “wounded and material damages were caused by the PYD militia targeting Al Shari’a school in the city of Afrin, north of Aleppo, with rocket launchers.” Shaam News Network reported that two civilians were killed. While most sources reported that eight civilians were injured, the Syrian Civil Defence in Aleppo published the names of one killed victim and thirteen injured victims, among which at least five children.

The Syrian Civil Defence reported that Abd Al-Sami’ Khallas had died in the airstrikes. Whereas SCD initially reported that 19-year-old Yassin Al Hamrawi had been injured, Sami Al Boush and Osama Al Masri later wrote on Facebook that the young man had died from his injuries.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights blamed the SDF for shelling “Al Ittehad al Arabi School – while an educational course took place inside the school – in the middle of Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, injuring eight students, partially destroying its building and damaging its furniture, on February 4.”

Mf-Sy’s News correspondent stated that “the SDF militia targeted the city of Afrin with a number of rocket-propelled grenades”, leading to one killed civilian and 12 wounded.

It should be noted that sources posted photos of a classroom stating it was Al Shari’ah school, whereas SN4HR posted a photo of the same classroom, stating that it was Al Ittehad school. It is possible that Al Shari’ah and Al Ittehad are referring to the same school, or that both schools were targeted, as several sources, such as @aa_arabic, reported that two schools and a mosque had been targeted.

However, a third school name was mentioned by @AdelPerwin, who tweeted that “several shells landed on Amir Al Ghbari School for Girls”, adding the same photo. This seems unlikely, as a video posted by @ZahedaRashkilo2 showed more of the evacuation of the site. Mainly young men can be seen leaving the classroom.

The Turkish Ministry of Defence (@tcsavunma) tweeted that “the bloody PKK / YPG terrorist organization targeting innocent civilians in the northern part of Syria, especially with bomb vehicle attacks, now fired four Grad missiles in two schools and one mosque in the centre of Afrin. One student died and seven students were injured in the terrorist organization’s low attack.

Sy-24 reported that “military sources confirmed that the shells were fired from the areas where the SDF militias are deployed at the Meng military airport and the vicinity of the city of Tal Rifaat.”

While sources blamed YPG-related militias, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that “the Turkish forces stationed in the northern countryside of Aleppo fired several rockets targeting Al Ittihad School, Al Sharia School and some residential neighbourhoods in the Turkish-controlled city of Afrin, north-west of Aleppo”.

@NewrozJamo21 blamed Syrian regime forces stationed in the city of Nubl, adding that the strike was reportedly a response to an earlier Turkish bombing near a Russian base near the village of Keshtar. Hence, Airwars has rated this incident as contested.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

14 years old injured
19 years old male from the Jobar neighborhood in Damascus killed
