Airwars assessment

Up to four men were killed in Coalition airstrikes or shootings with the alleged assistance of Turkish forces in the village of Al Adwania on October 25, 2021. One of the men, Abu Hamza Al-Shuhail, was identified as an arms dealer while sources were conflicted as to whether the other men were civilians or militants.

The Euphrates Post reported that Turkish forces entered the village of Al Adwania and shot the young man Abdul Rahman Salem Al-Hammad, who died instantly from his gunshot wound. They also pointed out that Abdul had been armed and was killed instantly. Private sources contested that the forces that entered the area were Turkish, reporting that they “spoke English and not Turkish”, making it likely that the forces belonged to the Coalition.

According to Euphrates Post, this incident occurred shortly after an alleged Coalition drone killed Sabahi Al-Musleh “Abu Hamza Al-Shuhail”, identified as being a former arms dealer close to ISIS. A tweet from @DeirEzzorNow disputed this, stating that “Sabahi is not closely associated with the terrorist organization ISIS but the man was an old arms dealer… he joined the 20th Division – and sometimes he works as a smuggler towards Turkey.”

The Syrians for Truth and Justice released a report where they identified Abu Hamza as being a “a famous arms dealer in the region” who “supplied and sold massive quantities of various types of firearms to several parties in the Syrian conflict, chiefly IS”. Al-Shuhail worked with the factions of the former Free Syrian Army (FSA), Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Nusra Front)/Qaeda, and later with both IS and the SDF. He rented the farmhouse in al-Adwaniya—which is under the military control of SNA-affiliated 20th Division—and made it a headquarters for administrating his business, which included people smuggling “in coordination with SNA commanders”.

Additionally, two other people were killed by “unknown fire” when they rode a motorcycle to inspect the location of the drone strike, identified as being Sami Khalil Al-Khuzam, an electrician who worked in an agricultural vehicle repair shop from the village of Al-Marayeh in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, and Nawaf Khalaf Al-Hawas, a shepherd from the village of Al-Tabiya. Orient News attributed the death of Sami and Nawaf to the Turkish forces that entered the area following the airstrikes.

Eye of Euphrates referred to “at least three” people killed in addition to Abu Hamza Al-Shuhail as being his “companions” but did not specifically identify if they were militants or civilians and their reporting also seems to indicate that the drone strike killed all four victims. However, a tweet from @DeirEzzorNow specifically identifies Abu Hamza Al-Shuhail, Abdul, and Nawaf as all being from Deir Ezzor and as all being members of the 20th National Army Division (they did not mention Sami Khalil).

The report by the Syrians for Truth and Justice identified the location as being a newly constructed farm adjacent to the Syria-Turkey border in al-Adwaniya village. Following the drone strike that killed Abu Hamza, Turkish ground troops came from Turkey and encircled the area, exchanging fire and killing a gunman in the farmhouse named Abdulrahman Salem al-Hammad, who “used to work with al-Shuhail and visited the farmhouse frequently”. In addition, two other civilians “arrived in the target area about an hour and a half after the assassination operation started” and were killed. Sami al-Khuzami died when he was shot in the chest, and Nawaf al-Khalaf died when he was shot in the head, possibly by sniper fire due to the location. Both were “killed on the main street leading to the farm, about 150 meters away from the farmhouse”. Overall, the incident resulted in the death of three civilians “who maintained no relations with the arms dealer”.

On November 27th 2021, the UK government announced that they had conducted strikes in this location without giving details about who was killed: “The crew of a remotely piloted Reaper, armed with Hellfire missiles, tracked a known terrorist in northern Syria, near the city of Ras al Ayn, and at a safe moment, when the individual was alone in a field, carried out a successful attack.”

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:

Abdul Rahman Salem Al-Hammad
Adult male killed
Sami Khalil Al-Khuzam

Nawaf Khalaf Al-Hawas

Airwars assessment

At least one man was killed and another civilian was wounded in an alleged Russian or regime airstrike on Balioun villiage on June 7, 2021. Sources are contested as to whether the man killed was a civilian, with one source referring to him as a fighter.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, “a man from Kansafra village in the southern suburbs of Idlib governorate, named as Khaled Yousef al Khalil, was killed on June 7, 2021, when Russian forces used a missile launcher to fire a missile equipped with a Krasnopol laser guidance system at Balyoun village in the southern suburbs of the governorate.”

The Syrian Civil Defense reported “one person was killed, and another was wounded, this morning, Monday, June 7, by missile strikes by the regime forces targeting a fuel station in the middle of the town of Balion in the southern countryside of Idlib. @SyrianCoalition quoted the Civil Defense as referring to the man killed and the other person wounded as civilians and Shaam News also referred to the man killed as a civilian.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights referred to the man killed as “a fighter of the factions” and a “fighter of the regime-backed factions” but pointed out that he was killed in his home, not on the frontlines.

Sources were contested in attributing the strikes, with Syrian Civil Defense and @IdlibPlus blaming the regime while Syrian Network for Human Rights identified Russia as being responsible.

The incident occured in the morning.

According to Step News, “the Israeli army targeted a person near the border fence with the occupied Golan on the outskirts of the town of Ain al-Tina. The person is from the town of Hadar, and he was wounded as a result of being directly targeted by Israeli forces.” However, @WithinSyriaBlog referred to the man wounded as being Druze and added that he is a “native of the Israeli-occupied town of Majdal Shams”.

Shaam News reported that Israeli forces “targeted a house” and the strike resulted in one person being injured. A tweet from @ElmasDean identified him as being “seriously injured” and another source described his condition as “his life is in danger”.

Euphrates Post identified the “position of the Assad regime and Iranian militias” as being the target of the airstrikes and that “the Israeli bombing resulted in the injury of a civilian, who was transferred to Quneitra Hospital.”

Other sources also identified the injured man as a civilian. However, a tweet from @WithinSyriaBlog referred to Mr. Mahamoud as being ” a fighter in al-Qunitra’s NDF”, adding that “his brothers, Nazir and Tha’air, were both killed in the war and his late father, Walid Mahmoud, was imprisoned by Israel.”

Times of Israel referred to the location of the strikes as an alleged Hezbollah site and added that Mr. Mahamoud worked for Hezbollah. Carmel and North Portal added that foreign forces, including Hezbollah, hire local recruits to work for them in the area and Nziv.net identified the injured man as someone who “cooperates with Hezbollah mainly on drug distribution and observations of the Israeli border.”

According to Syrian Arab News Agency, “a civilian was martyred in the aggression, and six others, among them a child and his mother were injured, in addition to causing material damages as the Israeli aggression targeted a civilian plastics factory.”

However, Shaam reported that the it was actually a military facility, “activists on social media circulated scenes showing successive fires and explosions emanating from a site that was hit by an air strike in what is believed to be a warehouse of ammunition and weapons belonging to Assad’s forces and the Iranian militias supporting him.”

A tweet from @AsaadHannaa, a journalist for Al Monitor, identified the facility as being “suspected to manufacture drugs of Captagon pills and other drugs in #Latakia; belonging to Badih and Wissam Al-Assad (the family of Bashar Al-Assad)”.

@SAMSyria0 also identified a wood and ceramics warehouse as being struck in the vicinity of al-Raml al-Janoubi neighborhood in the south of Lattakia, in addition to providing the coordinates and referring to the sites struck in Lattakia as being “completely civilian and belonging to civilians”.

Ynet News reported that according to Syrian television, as a result of the attack, electricity infrastructure in a certain area of the port city of Latakia was damaged, and as a result, the supply of electricity to residents in the area was stopped. Technical teams are working to restore the infrastructure. It was also reported that private homes in the area were also damaged as a result of the attack.

Airwars assessment

Four civilians from the same family including two children were reported killed and four others including an infant were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes, or Syrian regime rockets launched to respond to Israeli airstrikes in Kazo neighborhood in Hama on January 22nd, 2021.

The family is displaced from Idlib, and it seems that one of the children died of his injuries in the hospital, according to local sources. Two children were pulled out of the rubble and the family members were taken to Hama National Hospital. @SAMSyria0 said that the rocket hit a building that was inhabited by a family of 10 members (parents, grandparents and 6 children).

Governorate Hama provided the names of the civilians killed on Facebook: Karmo Saeed Al-Abdo; Elham Karmo al-Abdo; Munjid Karmo al-Abdo; Mahmoud Muhammad Talib Halabiya. In addition, names were provided of those injured: Yusra Junaid Al-Ahmad; Khaled Karmo al-Abdo; Nour Muhammad Tariq Halabiya; Khawla Muhammad Tariq Halabiya.

Deutsche Welle News reported that two children were among the four people wounded in the attack.

As to what the Israelis targeted, Syrian Files said that attack targeted a surface-to-surface missiles factory run by the scientific research center. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that attack targeted five locations that had “members of the militia loyal to Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah which were present within the regime’s military forces in the vicinity of Hama and its proximity in the region Al-Wusta from Syria, which led to its complete destruction.” Iran Wire Arabic said that the attack targeted “warehouses for storing weapons for Iranian militias in 3 locations, one of which is in the 47th Brigade of the 8th Division, and Iranian militias use it to store missiles, while the bombing also targeted a military center for developing weapons, especially missiles near scientific research in Masyaf, and a military headquarters for the Revolutionary Guard in the Umrah area of Ain Halakim district, west of Hama.”

As to who is responsible, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) affiliated with the Syrian regime reported that Israeli forces launched rockets targeting the surrounding of Hama governorate, and that the Syrian air defence responded to the attack. SANA then said that a family consisting of a father, a mother and two children were killed, and four others, an elderly person, a woman and two children were injured, and that three houses were demolished in the western side of Hama.

However, @Syriahr blamed the Syrian regime for the killing and injuring of the civilians saying that they were killed by rockets of the Syrian regime which were launched from Hama’s military airport, located meters away from Kazo neighborhood. The Observatory said that “the remnants of the missiles fired by the regime’s air defense brigades, in an attempt to counter the Israeli missiles, killed a family consisting of a woman, her husband and two children, in addition to the injury of four, who are an elderly man, two children and a woman, after the remnants of one of the missiles fell on the Kazo neighborhood in the northwestern part of Hama.”

Sounds of explosions were also heard in Tartus, Banias and rural Damascus as a result of launching of air defence missiles.

@SAMSyria0 mentioned that ‘part of a military object, a missile, were found in Khirbet al-Wahhadneh area in Ajloun governorate in Jordan, in the sane time of the raid, and the sound of an explosion was reported in Irbid, north of Jordan, during the raid.’

@SAMSyria0 then tweeted images of what described ‘parts of the S200 long-range air defense missile near Yabroud in Damascus countryside, which is most likely the cause of the sound of the explosion that was heard in the vicinity of Damascus.’ Another missile was found in Ras Al-Ma’arra in Qalamoun area in rural Damascus.

@khalediskef also shared images describing them as ‘fragments of the missiles that were used during the Israeli raid on Hama, it was found that they were American GBU-39 guided bombs.’

Local sources also shared images of missiles in Tartus and the Observatory denied that there was an Israeli attack on Tartus, and said what was found was remnants of the regime’s air defence response to the attack in Hama.

According to Iran Wire, the attacks killed 40 Syrian regime members and 20 members of the Iranian militias, in addition to destroying the targeted sites.

The incident occured at approximately 4:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

Up to three civilians, including at least one woman, were reportedly killed in alleged Israeli air or artillery strikes or the shrapnel of Syrian regime defence missiles in Al Hayjana in rural Damascus, Syria on August 31st, 2020. At least one other civilian was injured.

Several sources reported multiple alleged Israeli strikes in southern Syria. Baladi News reported that military sites of regime forces and Iranian militias were targeted. The regime-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency stated that the “Israeli aggression targeted the southern region with bursts of rockets, and our air defence system responded to them.” According to SANA, the shelling took place from the the Jabal al-Sheikh area towards the occupied Syrian Golan.

According to a military source, SANA reported two deaths, seven wounded and material damage, without specifying the number of civilian casualties.

Step News Agency also reported that ” Israeli warplanes targeted, with several air strikes, the sites of the Syrian regime and Iranian militias in the hills surrounding the Al-Kiswah area in the countryside.” Step also wrote that “thee residents of the capital Damascus circulated a video clip documenting the departure of an air defence missile from one of the military barracks of the Syrian regime south of Damascus, and its fall on the ground in the vicinity of Al Kiswa, south of the capital,”

According to a @HalebTV correspondent, one of the regime’s air defence missiles fell on the house of a civilian in Hayjana, killing a woman and injuring three people, as well as destroying the house completely.

@khalediskef, among other sources, identified the killed woman as Mutla Al Sarhan and one of the injured civilians as her husband.

Hasakah Eye concluded that “Israeli shelling killed 11 people, seven Hezbullah tracking elements, three Syrian regime elements, and three civilians after Israeli bombing on the vicinity of Damascus airport”, writing that the strikes targeted Hezbollah elements.

Instead of reporting airstrikes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Israeli rocket attacks coming from the occupied Golan Heights.

According to Haaretz News, an IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Hedi Zilberman, addressed the attack this morning, saying: “The IDF has an interest and has strategic goals in the northern arena, and we are doing everything necessary to meet those goals.” In an interview with Gali Tzahal, Zilberman declined to comment on the identities of those killed in the attack, saying: “I do not want to go into these specific issues. “He was confident that the IDF was working day and night to ensure that our strategic goals in the northern arena were properly realized.”

The incident occured at approximately 10:40 pm local time.
