Airwars assessment

On May 13th 2022, five to six people were reported killed, one was reported to be a civilian, and seven to nine were injured, including one child, a young girl, when Israeli missiles hit the Central region of Syria in the vicinity of Al-Suqaidi village, Maysaf city, in the Hama countryside. Al Araby news reported that four of the people were killed were soliders, and one was a civilian.

One source, the BBC, said that seven soliders were wounded but Shaam news said that three Syrian soliders, two civil servants were killed, and two Syrian soldiers were wounded.

Whilst the Syrian air defenses intercepted “most” of the missiles, the ones that were not able to be intercepted and hit Syria caused civilian harm.

One person who was reportedly killed was Assistant Ammar Hussein Al-Jubaili, who was described by @Ali29919223 on Twitter as “one of the heroes of the air defense, who refused to leave his vehicle while responding to the agression.”  The other names, reported by Msyaf news said were “Lieutenant Yazan Mualla Ahmad”, “Lieutenant Ayham Abdul Karim Al-Hussein”, “Ahmed Afif Al-Din Muhammad”, and “Ali Alloush.” It is unclear which name is the civilian who was killed.

Al Araby reported that Israeli forces targeted two sites in the Al-Bireh and Al-Suwaidi areas in Masyaf, and targeted weapons depots for the Syrian regime forces and Iranian-backed militas, as well as military buildings under preparation, about two kilometers from the city.  A local source, @brATWXTvNQyCfdR reported that Israeli forces targeted “shipments of Iranian weapons produced at the Scientific Research Center in Masyaf.”

According to Al Araby, fires were also reported to have broken out on agricultural land.

The official Syrian regime news agency, SANA reported that ‘At 23.20 on Friday evening, the Israeli enemy launched an air agression with bursts of missiles from over the Mediterranean, west of Banias, targeting some points in the Central Region.”

A military source was reported to have said, “our air defenses intercepted the missiles and downed most of them”

@Schikhmousa reported on Twitter that apparently the attack was targeting “Iranian militia points.”  There was reported to be a high intensity bombardment which lasted for about an hour.

DW News reported that Syria accuses Israel of carrying out the second bombing of its kind within a month.

AFP reported that “the Israeli army told AFP they do not comment on reports in the foreign media.”

The Times of Israel reported that “an Israeli sattellite company and intelligence firm published images Sunday it said showed the damage at an underground facility in Syria from airstrikes days earlier that were attributed to Israel.” The Times of Israel also reported that these airstrikes were the “second alleged Israeli strike on [Syria] in days.”

The incident occured at approximately 8:23 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

At least two civilians were killed in alleged Israeli strikes in the vicinity of Damascus on March 7, 2022. In addition, up to four militants were also killed and up to six others were injured.

Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), a Syrian regime-controlled news agency, reported that two civilians were killed by Israeli strikes in the vicinity of Damascus at around 5am, in addition to material losses. SANA added that the regime’s air defenses intercepted most of the missiles and that the source of the missiles was southern Lebanon south of Beirut.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights originally reported that there were no casualties resulting from the Israeli strikes but later revised their reporting to “two members of Iranian-backed militiamen were killed in the Israeli attack, one of whom is from the southern Syrian province of Daraa and was operating under the banner of a local Iranian-backed militia, and the other was not identified whether he is a Syrian or non-Syrian fighter. The Israeli attack also injured six Iranian-backed militiamen.”

A tweet from @HalabTodayTV differentiated between the civilians and militants killed, reporting that “two civilians and 4 members of the regime forces were killed in an Israeli bombing”.

A tweet from SAM Syria identified two of the people killed: Honorable Lieutenant Khaled Ghazi Ghazieh and Honorable Lieutenant Ali Muhammad Al-Nassar, both from Daraa Governorate – the city of al-Sanamayn. @HoranFreeMedia added that Al-Nasser “[worked] within a local militia backed by Iran.”

Euphrares Post quoted the official Iranian agency, Tasnim, which announced the killing of two leaders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards militia – Colonel Ihsan Karbalapour and Colonel Mortada Saeed. Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added that both Colonels died after being transferred to hospitals in Damascus.

Shaam News quoted informed sources that indicated that the day before the strikes, “an Iranian Boeing 747 cargo plane belonging to Fars Qeshm Airlines (the Iranian Revolutionary Guards) made a flight between Tehran and Damascus and stayed at Damascus International Airport for about three hours.” Sout Al Asima added that Iran uses this plane to transport arms and ammunition shipments to Syria.

Military sources told Sout Al Asima that the strikes occurred at a site belonging to the Iranian militias in the vicinity of Damascus International Airport, another Iranian militia site south of the capital which they suspected was a warehouse for storing weapons, and an Iranian outpost near the city of “Al-Qutayfah”. @SAMSyria0 also identified a marble factory in the Al-Salima Industrial Area at the entrance to Dahiyat Al-Assad as a site of the strikes.

The incident occured at approximately 5:00 am local time.

Airwars assessment

At least one civilian was killed and and six others, including one to three children and a woman, were injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on various locations in Latakia in the early morning hours on May 5, 2021.

Images posted by @SAMSyria0 show three different children, a woman, and an elderly man being treated for wounds allegedly sustained during the Israeli strikes. Another tweet reported that according to the General Authority of Masyaf National Hospital, quoting Dr. Maher Younis, 10 injuries were being treated so far, including four serious injuries, from strikes near Deir Shamil in Hama. It is unclear if those injured are civilians or militants.

@SAMSyria0 identified “Lieutenant Sharaf: Hussein Ali Faisal Abeda”, a regime soldier, as being killed in the strikes on Lattakia.

According to Syrian Arab News Agency, “a civilian was martyred in the aggression, and six others, among them a child and his mother were injured, in addition to causing material damages as the Israeli aggression targeted a civilian plastics factory.”

However, Shaam reported that the it was actually a military facility, “activists on social media circulated scenes showing successive fires and explosions emanating from a site that was hit by an air strike in what is believed to be a warehouse of ammunition and weapons belonging to Assad’s forces and the Iranian militias supporting him.”

A tweet from @AsaadHannaa, a journalist for Al Monitor, identified the facility as being “suspected to manufacture drugs of Captagon pills and other drugs in #Latakia; belonging to Badih and Wissam Al-Assad (the family of Bashar Al-Assad)”.

@SAMSyria0 also identified a wood and ceramics warehouse as being struck in the vicinity of al-Raml al-Janoubi neighborhood in the south of Lattakia, in addition to providing the coordinates and referring to the sites struck in Lattakia as being “completely civilian and belonging to civilians”.

Additional details from SANA were that the strikes occurred at about 2:18am and the planes came “from the direction of south west of Lattakia targeting some positions in the coastal region.” @freeehsem added that 35 missiles were used in the bombardment.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the “Israeli airstrikes hit military positions of regime forces and Iranian-backed militias in both countryside of Hama and Latakia in the early hours of Wednesday morning.” In addition, “one civilian was killed and over five others, including a woman and three children, were injured as well as the destruction of a building, but it was not known if it was a warehouse or a workshop, in Ras Shamra and Ras al-Ain in Latakia countryside. However, it is not known if Israeli missiles or shrapnel of the missiles of the regime’s air-defences left these casualties and caused the material damage.”

A post from Nors studies pointed out that “one of the targeted sites is in Ras Shamra, away from the Russian Hmeimim base, where the S-400 systems are located only 20 km away.”

Ynet News reported that according to Syrian television, as a result of the attack, electricity infrastructure in a certain area of the port city of Latakia was damaged, and as a result, the supply of electricity to residents in the area was stopped. Technical teams are working to restore the infrastructure. It was also reported that private homes in the area were also damaged as a result of the attack.

This incident was geolocated by @obretix. The majority of sources attributed the strikes to Israel but the Israeli Defense Forces refused to comment on the strikes.

Airwars assessment

At least three young men on an oil tanker were killed in alleged Israeli drone strikes off the coastal city of Baniyas on April 24, 2021 according to local sources.

A tweet from @SAMSyria0 reported that “the body of the young man, Ahmed Amin, from Arwad Island – Tartous, who is a crew member of the targeted ship, has been found. The search is still going on for the victims: the young man, Ahmed Mohammed, from the village of Balgons – Baniyas and the young Muhammad Hussein Yassin – Aleppo.”

A later tweet from @SAMSyria0 adds that “the young Ahmed Wafiq Muhammad, 18 years old, from the village of Balgons – Banias Tartous” has been identified as being killed on the oil tanker.

A Facebook post from Samaher Nasif added that Muhammad Hussein Yassin – Aleppo was also killed on the oil tanker.

Tik Debka reported that “other sources are clears that in the attack 4 of the crew of the tanker were killed, three of them Syrians.”

According to Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, there was “an explosion in an oil tanker coming from Iran, near the oil refinery in the coastal city of Banias.” At the time of their reporting, “it was not known whether the explosion was caused by a drone attack or naval attack on an oil tank within the tanker. The explosion caused fire and material damage, but no casualties have been reported.” SOHR later added that three Syrian people had died in the “burning of a fuel tank inside the Iranian oil tanker,” adding that “it is not known whether they are among the cadres working within the tanker.”

“The director of the observatory, Rami Abdel-Rahman, told Agence France-Presse, “At least three people were killed, two of them were crew members” in the attack, which caused a fire in one of the tanker’s tanks.”

Multiple sources, including the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency, alleged that the explosion was caused by a drone coming from Lebanese territorial waters but that the identify of the belligerent responsible was unknown.

According to a tweet from @NorsForStudies citing Russia Today, Moscow claimed that the tanker was not targeted and that the fire that broke out was due to negligence; Iran denied that the tanker belonged to them and identified it as being Lebanese; and the Syrian regime identified the tanker as being Iranian and blamed Israel for the strike.

@OQBAH33 attributed a drone strike to Israel and identified the tanker as belonging to Iran. A tweet from @IntelliTimes reported that Israel denied any connection to the attack on the tanker.

France 24 reported that according to Iranian media, the oil tanker was “one of three Iranian tankers that arrived shortly before at the Syrian oil port of Banias.” However, other sources contested whether the tanker was Iranian, with Reuters quoting TankerTrackers, who said in a tweet that “the tanker seen burning today off the coast of Baniyas is not an Iranian vessel”, but Beirut-registered and the semi-official news agency Tasnim denied it was Iranian.

CNN included details that “The “Al-Ahlam” channel quoted unidentified sources as saying that the tanker was targeted “with two projectiles, one of which hit the front of it, leaving partial damage, and the other hit its roof and caused more damage.”

The Israeli military declined to comment on the incident. @obretix geolocated this incident.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that attack targeted five locations that had “members of the militia loyal to Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah which were present within the regime’s military forces in the vicinity of Hama and its proximity in the region Al-Wusta from Syria, which led to its complete destruction.” Iran Wire Arabic said that the attack targeted “warehouses for storing weapons for Iranian militias in 3 locations, one of which is in the 47th Brigade of the 8th Division, and Iranian militias use it to store missiles, while the bombing also targeted a military center for developing weapons, especially missiles near scientific research in Masyaf, and a military headquarters for the Revolutionary Guard in the Umrah area of Ain Halakim district, west of Hama.”

As to who is responsible, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) affiliated with the Syrian regime reported that Israeli forces launched rockets targeting the surrounding of Hama governorate, and that the Syrian air defence responded to the attack. SANA then said that a family consisting of a father, a mother and two children were killed, and four others, an elderly person, a woman and two children were injured, and that three houses were demolished in the western side of Hama.

@khalediskef also shared images describing them as ‘fragments of the missiles that were used during the Israeli raid on Hama, it was found that they were American GBU-39 guided bombs.’

Airwars assessment

Up to three civilians, including at least one woman, were reportedly killed in alleged Israeli air or artillery strikes or the shrapnel of Syrian regime defence missiles in Al Hayjana in rural Damascus, Syria on August 31st, 2020. At least one other civilian was injured.

Several sources reported multiple alleged Israeli strikes in southern Syria. Baladi News reported that military sites of regime forces and Iranian militias were targeted. The regime-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency stated that the “Israeli aggression targeted the southern region with bursts of rockets, and our air defence system responded to them.” According to SANA, the shelling took place from the the Jabal al-Sheikh area towards the occupied Syrian Golan.

According to a military source, SANA reported two deaths, seven wounded and material damage, without specifying the number of civilian casualties.

Step News Agency also reported that ” Israeli warplanes targeted, with several air strikes, the sites of the Syrian regime and Iranian militias in the hills surrounding the Al-Kiswah area in the countryside.” Step also wrote that “thee residents of the capital Damascus circulated a video clip documenting the departure of an air defence missile from one of the military barracks of the Syrian regime south of Damascus, and its fall on the ground in the vicinity of Al Kiswa, south of the capital,”

According to a @HalebTV correspondent, one of the regime’s air defence missiles fell on the house of a civilian in Hayjana, killing a woman and injuring three people, as well as destroying the house completely.

@khalediskef, among other sources, identified the killed woman as Mutla Al Sarhan and one of the injured civilians as her husband.

Hasakah Eye concluded that “Israeli shelling killed 11 people, seven Hezbullah tracking elements, three Syrian regime elements, and three civilians after Israeli bombing on the vicinity of Damascus airport”, writing that the strikes targeted Hezbollah elements.

Instead of reporting airstrikes, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Israeli rocket attacks coming from the occupied Golan Heights.

According to Haaretz News, an IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Hedi Zilberman, addressed the attack this morning, saying: “The IDF has an interest and has strategic goals in the northern arena, and we are doing everything necessary to meet those goals.” In an interview with Gali Tzahal, Zilberman declined to comment on the identities of those killed in the attack, saying: “I do not want to go into these specific issues. “He was confident that the IDF was working day and night to ensure that our strategic goals in the northern arena were properly realized.”

The incident occured at approximately 10:40 pm local time.

Airwars assessment

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a civilian was killed and others injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on Saboura village in Hama countryside on June 24th, 2020 after midnight.

The Observatory said “A civilian was killed and three others were wounded, as a result of the Israeli bombing of the village of Saboura in the eastern Hama countryside on June 24th.”

Around the same time a reported weapons factory was also targeted at nearby Salamiya, although there were no reports of civilian harm: “The Syrian Observatory learned from reliable sources that Russian forces had informed the director of the onion plant near Salamieh for evacuation before the Israeli bombing. And Israeli air strikes destroyed two of the buildings that were weapons depots, while the third one, which is used to manufacture crisps, remained.”

Nziv.net also reported that after the attack, “the sounds of ambulances rushing to the attacked site were heard. Confirmed reports confirm that there were casualties at the sites attacked.” In this specific strike, the cultural center was the alleged location of the strikes.

@SanaAjel tweeted that “SANA – Military source: At 00:45 pm, the Israeli enemy carried out a new air aggression targeting several locations of ours in Salamiya and Saburah in the countryside of Hama.”

In a special interview with News 13, the commander of the Ramat David base, Colonel III, did not confirm the attack, but agreed to say that “the goal is to reduce the Iranian military presence in Syria and all its elements that threaten the State of Israel.” They added they seven people were killed but did not specify if they were civilians or militants. A tweet from @yonibmen specified that of the seven killed were “5 Iranians and 2 Syrians killed in an Israeli attack in Syria, targets were attacked in the Hamat, a-Sahna and Swida areas in the south”.
