Airwars assessment

One child was allegedly injured by a NATO or rebel airstrike on Brega.

Surt Son posted a video on Youtube showing the victim named Mohamed Musa. According to the video he was injured by artillery shelling on his home which would point at the rebels as the culprit. The description however says he was bombed by NATO planes.

NATO on this day reported striking “1 Armed Military Vehicle, 6 Multiple Rocket Launchers” in the vicinity of Brega.

On July 31st, 2011, seven missiles were fired on Misurata, leading to the death of 3 men and wounding four others. Two brothers, Abdul Salam Abdul Latif and Youssef Abdul Latif were killed in the strikes, and their cousin Muhammad Abdul Latif died of injuries after. Four others were reported injured as a result of the strikes. It was unclear the combatant status of any of the wounded or dead.

LoverMisurata posted on Facebook “7 missiles fell on the city of Misurata, which led to the death of 2 of the Abdul Latif family, as well as wounding 5 residents of the city and losses in property.” They later described one fo the wounded, Muhammad Abdul Latif, as deceased due to injuries.

No additional information was provided on wounded.

On July 24th, 2011, six rockets were fired on Southern Misurata by Gaddafi forces, resulting in the deaths of two people, one Muhammad Muhammad al-Qunaidi and one unnamed woman. Injuries were also reported, but no numbers were provided.

Bint Misurata posted on Facebook “6 rockets fell this morning on civilian neighborhoods in southern Misrata, killing Muhammad Muhammad Al-Qunaidi and wounding others …”

On July 6th, 2011, Gaddafi forces shelled the Al-Dafniya area, west of Misurata, killing three civilians and between 14 and 16 rebel fighters. An additional 42 to 50 rebel fighters were reported injured. No additional information on civilians were reported.

The head of the media committee in Misurata, quoted in CNN, stated that three civilians were killed by Grad rockets, reporting 14 rebel fighters killed and 42 other injured. Al-Alam TV reported 16 dead and more than 50 injured, although it was unclear how many of each were civilians.

A NATO airstrike reportedly killed eight civilians in Tawergha.

Press TV reported: “A NATO warplane has targeted a market in the Libyan town of Tawragha, leaving at least eight civilians dead and several others wounded.

Some of the injured are in critical condition, Xinhua reported on Wednesday, citing a local news agency.

NATO carried out the airstrike on Tawragha, 300 km east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday amid reports that NATO warplanes were hovering over Tajura, another town 20 km east of Tripoli on the same day.”

Abbas Mansour said that “NATO bombed a vegetable market, a desalination center, and a two-storey house in Tawergha.”

Other sources said that the incident took place near the vegetable market and posted pictures and names of victims.

Tripoli Street denied that the incident happened and accused the people of lying.

NATO did not report airstrikes around Tawergha on that day.

Up to four civilians were reported killed by Gaddafi regime forces artillery shelling on Misurata.

Al Jazeera reported: “On the Misurata front, Reuters reported that three people were killed and 12 wounded in an artillery bombardment by Gaddafi forces on the Dafiniyah area.

More rockets fell on Wednesday in a suburb close to the port, and residents said no one was hurt, while a Reuters reporter said many dead sheep were lying in a field after the attack.”

February 17 Revolution of the Liberals of Libya said: “One of the city’s northeastern neighborhoods was shelled by long-range missiles by Gaddafi’s criminal battalions. About three rockets landed in one of the neighborhoods, causing material damage and wounding four civilians. The shelling killed about 35 sheep.”

Aisha Mansurey and Libya Alahrar TV said no human casualties occurred but the latter tweeted that six sheep were killed.

Al Somood reported: “The missile that fell yesterday evening in the Roiussat area was at the house of the Abu Shaiba family. A child was killed and his mother was seriously injured and she is now in the intensive care room.”

Libya Alahrar TV and @RanimMoh wrote he was 16 years old, Al Zawiya said 14.

Al Aan said the father was also injured.

Al Jazeera noted at the time: “On his part, a spokesman for the rebels said on Monday that nine people were killed and more than forty others were wounded on Sunday when forces loyal to Gaddafi bombed the town of Zintan, held by the rebels, in the west of the country.”

17 Feb Revolution wrote: “Libyan opposition spokesman said on Monday that nine people were killed on Sunday when forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi bombed the opposition-held Zintan town with artillery and missiles.

‘Nine were killed because of the bombing… yesterday, and more than 40 others were wounded, the spokesman, Abdul Rahman, told Reuters by phone from Zintan. ‘It was the heaviest bombardment in several weeks.'”
