Airwars assessment

At least one civilian was killed and seven others were injured in alleged Turkish drone strikes on Makhmur refugee camp on May 21, 2022. In addition, one to two alleged members of the PKK were killed in the same incident.

Camp director Nechirvan Mahmoud told AFP that a suspected Turkish drone struck a vehicle in Makhmur refugee camp, killing a resident.

According to @SweeneySteve, at least seven people were injured in the strikes on Makhmour refugee camp. @dersi4m reported that a young man named Haci Mirza Ali who was injured in the same strikes died from his injuries the following day.

BasNews reported that according to a Turkish security source, the person killed was a senior commander of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) named Mehmet Erdogan, codenamed Ahmet Rubar. “The source added that Rubar had directed and overseen the PKK operations in the northern areas of Makhmur, Sulaymaniyah, and Kirkuk since 2021. He used a fake ID card under the name Haji Mirza Ali, the source revealed.” Overall, BasNews identified “several people” as being killed and injured.

A tweet from @nicolas62574020 added that Turkey’s national intelligence organization accused Erdogan of “attempting to overthrow the constitutional order and violating Turkey’s territorial integrity” after joining the PKK in 1990. @SardarSattar added that “several PKK members” were killed in a PKK vehicle.

In contrast to reporting that those killed were militants, Media News reported that the vehicle struck belonged to the civilian and none of the sources specifically refer to Haci Mirza Ali as being a member of the PKK.

The New Arab pointed out that Makhmur refugee camp hosts more than 12,000 Kurdish refugees and that the camp is being sponsored by the United Nations.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), one of the two major political parties in the KRI, released a statement condemning the drone strike: “We call on the Iraqi government to fulfil its constitutional and national obligation to protect Iraqi soil and air space, including the KRI. The Iraqi government should approach the Turkish government about these violations through diplomatic channels. The KRI administration should summon Turkey’s ambassador and communicate to him its discontent with these attacks. There can be no excuse for border violations of this nature, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.”

All of the sources that report on the incident attributed the drone strikes to Turkey.

Between one and two children were killed and three others were injured in alleged Turkish drone strikes on a vehicle in the village of Bahira on February 9, 2022.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, two children were killed and three others were injured when a Turkish drone struck Bahira village in Al-Hasakah countryside. In addition, “SDF members were injured in the same village by shelling on their car, while they were escaping after their first car was attacked in Kharza village.”

A Facebook post from “Eastern region and Al Jazeera news” added that the victims of the bombing were in a car close to the military jeep that was destroyed by the plane and provided the names: Muhammad Ali Kallah, 11 years old – killed; Maher Issa Kallah, 13 years old; Omar Ghanem, 40, is a teacher from the village of Bahira; Alaa Gedo Ahmed, 25 years old. Turkey Now identified the children as being students in a preparatory school.

Hawar News put the casualty count at one child killed and three others injured, all of which were traveling in the same car and were taken to the People’s Hospital in Amuda.

A security source told North-Press that “the car was targeted by two bombs, the first one did not hit it, while the second bombardment directly hit the car.”

All of the sited sources that reported on the incident attributed the strikes and casualties to Turkish drones.

According to local sources, four people were killed and four to five civilians were injured in Turkish airstrikes in Takil Bakil village in the Derik countryside, in northeastern Syria on February 1st 2022 at 9pm in the evening by two missiles. The Syrian Democratic Forces identified the four people killed as being fighters.

According to local sources the Turkish bombing targeted an electric power station and an oil station. The bombing led to a power outage in the area, after the power station was left with destruction. ABC News added that the strike hit the building where the guards stay. This came a day after a Turkish drone stuck another power station near the Semalka border crossing between Syria and Iraq’s Kurdish region.

The four people who were killed were workers and guards at the electric power station, identified by the SDF as “our fighters who were in charge of protecting the station”. The SDF provided the names of the four fighters killed: Siamand Afrin, Khimkin Afrin, Shiar Kobani, and Muhyiddin Derik.

The SDF identified five civilian workers as being injured in the strikes while North Press Agency reported that four civilians were wounded. All injured civilians were taken to Dirk hospital.

One injured man, Othman Hussein Suleiuman, from the village of Borouj, told North Press, “all I remember is that I heard the sound of a plane, so I went inside the station to tell my colleagues.” The North Press added that “he heard the plane being hit by two missiles, but he lost consciousness and did not feel anything until he woke up in the hospital.”

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense released a statement declaring the strike the day of, stating that “In the Winter Eagle Operation carried out; shelters, bunkers, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and so-called headquarters and training camps belonging to terrorists who threaten our country, nation and border security were targeted. In the planning and execution of the operation, maximum sensitivity was shown for the safety of life and property of the civilian population and the protection of the environment.”

Al Jazeera pointed out that Turkey cited the 51st article of the UN Charter, which states that “nothing in the present Charter shall impair the inherent right of individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a Member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security”.

By neutralizing the PKK/KCK/YPG and other terrorist elements; In order to eliminate the terrorist attacks against our people and security forces from the North of Iraq and Syria and to ensure our border security; In line with our self-defense rights arising from Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, the Winter Eagle Air Operation was carried out against terrorist nests in the Derik, Sinjar and Karacak regions in the North of Iraq and Syria, which are used as bases by terrorists.
In the Winter Eagle Operation carried out; shelters, bunkers, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and so-called headquarters and training camps belonging to terrorists who threaten our country, nation and border security were targeted. Up to five civilians were killed and up to four others were injured in alleged Turkish shelling of the village of Hadriat and other surrounding villages in the countryside of Ain Issa on January 22, 2022.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Turkish bombings of the village of Hadriat resulted in the death of five civilians and the wounding of four others. This was the most violent attack carried out by Turkish forces in the last 2 months.

Hawar News reported on the killing of two residents of the village of Jabal from Turkish attacks. Hawar News also reported that two civilians were injured in the bombing of the village of Al-Msherfa. Images posted along with this report show two men getting treatment for their wounds.

North Press Agency put the casualty toll at two civilians killed and three injured, providing the names of the injured as: 20-year-old Muhammad Mahmud, the 45-year-old Muhammad Saleh Mahmud, and the 40-year-old Abdulrahim Hamoud Saleh. The source added that Abdulrahim Saleh Muhammad succumbed to his injuries after arriving at Martyr Omar Alosh Hospital in Ain Issa town.

Ain Issa Plus provided details that Abdulrahim Saleh Muhammad was a child, 14 years old, and add the name Hassan Al-Mohammed to the list of injured, who is 22 years old.

Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently also reported that people were killed and wounded from artillery shelling launched by the Turkish army, adding that “the SDF militia Sabah set up mortars in the vicinity of the village, targeting positions of the National Army militia”.

The Syrian Democratic Forces Press Center identified two civilians as being killed and two others as being injured, and their spokesman @farhad_shami posted a video on Twitter alongside this information that shows a man with blood on his leg, indicating he may be one of the men that was injured.

In addition to the civilian casualties, Syrian Arab News Agency identified that the strikes resulted in damage to “some homes and public and private properties”.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the attack to Turkish forces, with Ajansa Nûçeyan a Firate (ANF) identifed “rockets, Grad guns, tanks and mortar shells” as being used by Turkey “since the early hours of the morning”.

At least three civilian men, including a 70 year old man, were killed in alleged Turkish drone strikes on a vehicle in the al-Hilaliya neighborhood in the city of Qamishli on November 9, 2021.

The North Press Agency reported that three people were killed in a Turkish drone strike in the al-Hilaliya neighborhood in the city of Qamishli. Furat News Agency referred to the three people killed as being civilians.

According to the sources of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the person who was targeted in the explosion is a member of the Syrian Democratic Forces’ leadership’s advisory, but he was not in the targeted car at the time of the strikes. Instead, the explosion resulted in the death of his grandfather, his brother and a third of their relatives. At the time of reporting, they believed that the explosion could’ve been caused by a Turkish drone or an explosive device planted in the car.

Rudaw News also reported that the vehicle that was destroyed was an armored vehicle that belonged to the SDF and that the strike killed his brother Mazloum Gilo, and two of their relatives Yousef Gilo and Mohammed Gilo.

A tweet from @slmhktn refers to “PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) members” being in the car but does not specify who among the victims was a PKK member.

Images provided by local sources show a white SUV on fire in the middle of a residential neighborhood in the city of Qamishli, with residents and rescue teams trying to put out the fire. Tasrebat quoted a source that reported that ambulances transported the bodies of the victims, which were charred as a result of the fire, to the Khabat Military Hospital in the city.

Nalia Media Corporation added that the strike occurred at 3pm local time and that the drone belonged to Turkish forces.

Airwars assessment

Two people were killed and three others were injured in alleged Turkish drone strikes on Kobani on a vehicle on October 20, 2021. Sources were conflicted as to whether the people killed were civilians or militants while the three injured were reported to be civilians.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that a Turkish drone struck a car of civilians in Kobani, killing one of the “cadres” and his driver, in addition to injuring others, with one of them in serious condition.

Hawar News Agency reported that three civilians were injured in the drone strikes, which occurred at 15:30, and the injured were taken to Kobani hospitals for treatment. They provided the names of those injured: “the child Ali Shukri Lutfi Muhammad, aged 16, Bakr Jarada, the 49-year-old co-chair of the Justice Commission in the Euphrates region, and Ali Rashad Mistou, 19.”

Local sources told BasNews that the vehicle that was targeted by the Turkish drone was a “civilian car carrying a Kurdistan Workers’ Party official near the Amal Hospital in Kobani, which resulted in deaths and injuries”. However, they did not specify whether those killed or injured were civilians, adding that “these sources did not reveal the identify of the official or the number of dead and wounded”.

Aramme News identified the two people killed as being leaders of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and that the SDF imposed a security cordon on the scene following the incident. However, the correspondent for Ahdath Alyoum News reported that two administrative workers were killed alongside Bakr Jarada, who was injured.

Images listed by BasNews and Hawar News Agency show at least two different vehicles that sustained damage in the drone strikes.

All of the sources that reported on the incident pointed to Turkish drones as being responsible.

At least four civilians, including three children, were killed and two other civilians, including a woman and a child, were injured in alleged Turkish strikes on the town of Ain Issa on August 4, 2021.

According to a statement from the Syrian Democratic Forces, “the occupation army bombed with tank shells at exactly three o’clock this morning the homes of civilians in the east of the town of Ain Issa, where it committed a massacre against a family in the town of Al-Safawiyeh, east of the village of Al-Sharkarak on the international road M4. This morning, the bodies of four civilians from one family who lost their lives were transferred to Ain Issa town hospital, after the people retrieved their bodies from their house, which was destroyed due to the Turkish bombing.”

The SDF also published the names of the civilians killed: Zaid Khalaf Issa (54) years old. Ziyad Zaid Issa (12) years old. Mona Zaid Issa. Huda Zeid Issa. Jesr Press identified Zaid as being the father and Ziyad, Monda, and Huda as his children.

In addition, a woman and her daughter from the same family were also wounded in the bombing. They were taken to Raqqa Hospital due to severe injuries. North Press Agency identified the child injured as being one year old.

All of the sources that reported on the incident identified Turkey as being responsible for the strikes and North Press Agency specifically reported that Turkish tanks carried out the attacks.

A number of civilians including a 6-year-old child were reported injured in Turkish or pro-Turkey forces shelling on residential areas in Tal Tamr in Hasakah, Syria on February 10th, 2021. @baze_kurd said the child was seriously injured.

The child was identified by local sources as Yazan Mohammad Ali, while one source had a different variation of the name; Rizan Mohammad.

ANHA said the child is originally from Al-Dishisha village. The source reported that “the village of al-Tawila and that of al-Dishisha adjacent to the Aleppo- Hasaka International Highway known as the M4, were shelled by the Turkish Occupation Forces and the affiliated mercenary groups with artillery and mortar shells heavily in which Yezen Mohamed Ali, 6, from the village of Dishisha was injured in addition to some material damage.”

However, althawrah reported from the Syrian News Agency (SANA) that the child was injured in Al-Arisha village, not Al-Dashisha as other sources mentioned.

ASO network said the child was injured when a mortar shell landed and exploded near him while he was grazing sheep, and that he was taken to Al-Shaab hospital in Hasaka with wounds in different parts of his body as Ezdina reported. Afterwards, his condition was described as stable.

Basnews said that Turkey and pro-militants targeted sites of Syrian Democratic Forces in Tal Tamr on the day when the child was injured. Also reported that Turkish shelling on the M4 International road with heavy weapons led to the suspension of traffic on the M4 between the towns of Tal Tamer and Ain Issa.

No further information is available.
