Airwars assessment
On October 30th 2023, at least five men were killed and at least 15 others were injured by an alleged Israeli airstrike on a motorcycle and a car on al-Madrasa Street near al-Yazouri Pharmacy in the al-Amal neighborhood of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip. The civilian or militant status of all five men was contested.
Yassin Mohammed al-Majaida (33), Saeed Hamed Hamdouna (25), Zuhair Abu al-Khair (62), Bilal Abu Sultan (21), and Muhammad Haitham al-Ashour (17) were killed in the alleged strike. The status of the five men killed as civilians has been contested by one source, which referred to those killed as “Hamas militants.”
The names of those who were injured have not been made available. While most reports alleged 15 people had been injured, Twitter/X user @fcbl101 reported that the injury count was as high as 18.
The day of the alleged strike, Al Jazeera Palestine and @alhadathpost tweeted “martyrs and wounded in an Israeli bombing that targeted a civilian car in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip.” Providing further detail, @ShehabAgency reported “4 martyrs when a motorcycle with a car next to it was targeted on al-Madrasa Street near al-Yazouri Pharmacy in Khan Yunis.” According to Palinfo, “[Israeli] forces bombed with two reconnaissance missiles a bicycle, a car, and two gatherings of citizens near al-Yazouri Pharmacy…resulting in 4 martyrs and 15 injuries.” @Pal_newsps reported that “the number of martyrs increased to 5, and the martyrs were in the raid that targeted a car.” A video posted to Twitter/X by @factualnarrator that was attributed to journalist Hani al-Shaer shows a burned out car and motorcycle surrounded by pools of blood. A large crowd gathered around the scene and emergency sirens can be heard blaring nearby.
Online, numerous loved ones paid tribute to those killed in the alleged Israeli strike. A Facebook page for the ‘al-Majaida Family Association’ honored the bravery of Yassin Mohammed al-Majaida, writing that “with more signs of pride and pride, the al-Majaida family mourns its heroic martyr…Yassin Muhammad al-Majaida.” Yassin was said to have been killed “while trying to aid and save those who were bombed by the [Israeli military] planes.” Sharing a photo of Yassin, Shrief EL Magaida prayed, “May God have mercy on you and make your abode in Paradise.” Rawan Abu Alkhair mourned “the martyrdom of my uncle Zuhair Abu al-Khair.”
Mohammad Rezq shared a photo of Bilal Abu Sultan wearing a suit and sunglasses, and wrote, “We bring to you the news of the martyrdom of my friend: Bilal Abu Sultan.”
On November 1st Saja Khaled shared a photo of Saeed Hamed Hamdouna and expressed her grief over “the martyrdom of my husband, my daughter’s father, and my supporter, Saeed Hamed Hamdouna.” Her pain was immense: “I miss him, and oh earth, spread your wealth, for there is a soul on it that tore my soul apart and broke my heart with its departure, so what can I write except to pray for him that the Most Merciful forgives him and makes his resting place the bliss of Paradise.” He was, Saja wrote, “the joy of my heart, all my days.” Attaching a prayer, Saja pleaded “May God make it easy for you, my beloved, and have mercy on you and forgive you.”
One source, @MyLordBebo, quoted “Israeli TG [Telegram]” as saying that the five killed were Hamas militants, adding that there was “no way to validate if any Hamas fighter was actually hit.” This claim was not repeated elsewhere.
Where sources identified the belligerent, the strike was attributed to Israeli forces. A funeral was arranged for the following day.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
