Israeli forces allegedly bombed the home of the Abu Namous family located in a refugee camp to the west of Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, during the pre-dawn hours of Friday, October 27th, 2023. 55-year-old mother Nima Ibrahim Attiya Abu Namous was killed alongside her 32-year-old son. Nima’s son, Yasser Sobhi Hassan Abu Namous, was reportedly a member of Hamas’ militant wing, Al-Qassem Brigades. Yasser also worked as a journalist.

International and local news such as Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye, ​​Nabd and Quds News reported on the death of Nima Abu Namous and Yasser.

In a post shared by Yasser’s sister on January 19, 2025, she referred to Yasser as ‘the heroic Qassami martyr’. As such, Yasser has been recorded as a militant.

Shehab Agency and Facebook user Azzam al abadleh shared a video and photographs from the day of the funeral that portrayed the community at a loss, including an image of the deceased Yasser in a white shroud with his face covered with blood. The video and photographs were reposted and shared by the international and local community, such as @Palestinecapti1, ​​Megaphone and the World News/@ferozwala.

Facebook account Megaphone wrote that Yasser Abu Namous was the twenty-fifth journalist killed in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the conflict. According to the sources, he was a son of the “martyr” Dr. Subhi Abu Namous and grew up without a father.

Relatives and friends took to social media to commiserate about the death of Nima Abu Namous and Yasser. Facebook user Mohamme Eyad expressed grief about the passing of Yasser beloved friend, “I swear it’s still early, my heart” he wrote in a Facebook post that was accompanied by a photograph of the two together.

The names of the two victims have been reconciled with published Palestinian Ministry of Health lists. With thanks to journalist Alexandre Horn from CheckNews for identifying relevant sources, and Data Tech for Palestine for centralising the datasets.

This incident was updated based on a review of the Twitter/X account, @MiddleEastBuka, which on July 25, 2025 shared screenshots of posts shared by Yasser’s sister, referring to him as a militant.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the airstrike to Israeli forces.
