Airwars Assessment
On November 6, 2023, a Palestinian Red Crescent paramedic named Ramadan Ashour was injured by an alleged Israeli military bombing of the entrance to al-Quds Hospital, in the west of Gaza City in the Gaza Strip.
The day of the bombardment, the Palestinian Red Crescent announced “another violation against al-Quds Hospital and medical and ambulance crews in the #Gaza Strip” and shared a photograph of a man in his paramedic uniform with bandages covering part of his head and face.
@PalinfoAr quoted the Palestinian Red Crescent in reporting that “a paramedic was seriously injured in a bombing that targeted the entrance to al-Quds Hospital, in the west of Gaza City.” The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in the Middle East and North Africa (@IFRC_MENA) reported that “Paramedic Ramadan Ashour was injured by shrapnel in the head this morning as a result of the ongoing escalation of violence near al-Quds Hospital. Ramadan is currently receiving treatment in the hospital and his condition is stable. We repeat: Hospitals, medical and ambulance crews, and civilians are #NotATarget.” The IFRC also shared a photo of Ramadan on a hospital bed surrounded by medical personnel as he received treatment for his head injury.
In an interview with Mosaique FM, Raed Al-Nams, the media official of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, stated that “the Israeli air force targeted the entrance to the al-Quds Hospital building affiliated with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society with a missile this morning, which resulted in the destruction of ambulances and the injury of a paramedic in the head.”
On November 7, 2023, the Israeli military’s Telegram account (idfofficial) shared a post referring to the military’s activities in “the northern Gaza Strip…over the past day.” Included in the post were references to Al-Quds Hospital, with the account claiming that “Hamas terrorists who barricaded themselves in a building adjacent to the al-Quds Hospital, and planned to carry out an attack on the forces from there. IDF soldiers directed an aircraft to strike the Hamas terrorists.” The post also noted that “The attack led to significant secondary explosions,” claiming that such explosions were evidence of Hamas weapons. The post included “a video of the strike.” Airwars geolocated the building which is struck in the video to 31°30’25″N 34°25’50″E. In the video, four vehicles sit at the entrance of the building, and the strike appears to hit the entrance to the building, rather than the building itself.
Airwars was unable to locate imagery of the strike in which Ramadan was injured, and as such Airwars is unable to say if Ramadan was injured in the strike which was recorded and shared by the Israeli military, or another one nearby, on the same day. As such, the Israeli military remains the ‘likely’ belligerent in this incident, and this strike video has not changed this incident’s strike status to declared. This will be updated should additional information become available.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
