Airwars assessment
Shortly before 7:30 AM on Saturday, August 26, 2024, Israeli forces allegedly bombed Al Izz Bin Abdulsalam School, a school sheltering displaced persons located north of the Al Nuseirat Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip, killing two individuals, including at least one woman. Many others, including women and children, sustained injuries, although the exact number of wounded has not yet been reported among sources.
A tweet from @Sa7atPlBreaking initially reported that “an elderly woman” was killed and a number of others were wounded, and later updated the death toll to “two martyrs.” Anadolu Agency two women were killed while “many others” were injured when an “Israeli drone” dropped a bomb. @AJEnglish mentioned that “several Palestinians, including children” were killed in the attack.
Videos depicting the aftermath of the Israeli bombing showed extensive destruction of the school, now reduced to rubble. The school had been serving as a shelter for displaced people, thousands according to @HabibeMedia, as indicated by images of balconies laden with the drying clothes and personal belongings of families who had previously fled Israeli strikes elsewhere in the Gaza Strip.
Images posted by @naba_pix show victims of the attack on the school being treated at a nearby hospital – at least one injured man with a head wound, one injured child with a head wound, another injured child with an arm injury, and a woman in a nearby hospital bed. At least one other injured man can be seen in an image posted by @HabibeMedia.
While six sources reported that Israeli shelling was responsible for the incident that killed civilians and destroyed the school, two sources, including Oman Media and Al Jazeera, attributed the attack to Israeli airstrikes.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the bombing to Israeli forces.
The incident occured in the morning.
