Airwars assessment
Four civilians, including two women, were killed and several civilians were injured in an alleged Israeli strike near the Hassan Al-Banna Mosque within the Zeitoun neighbourhood, east of Gaza City. This incident occurred shortly before 11:56 AM on November 6, 2023.
The victims of the airstrike on the Aql family home, a residential building, were members of the same family: 63-year-old man Jamil Muhammad Abdullah Aql (Abu Bilal), 24-year-old man Anas Adel Muhammad Aql, 54-year-old woman Subha Ramadan Hussein Aql (Umm Muhammad), and 52-year-old woman Abeer Farouk Ali Aql (Umm Alaa). Aya Tariq Aql was also reported as missing under the rubble, according to a Facebook post by the Aql family. Additionally, the same post stated that other relatives and neighbours suffered a range of injuries and mentioned “other martyrs in the vicinity of the house”, who are not yet accounted for.
Another condolence post by a relative, Yasser Mohamed, announced the death of four of his family members, including his father’s cousin, Jamil Aql; the wife of his cousin, Samir Aql; the wife of his other cousin, Adel Aql; and finally, Adel’s son, Anas. This condolence post corresponded with the Aql family’s announcement. It stated that some relatives were still beneath the rubble, increasing the likelihood of the death toll rising upon future identification. Yasser expressed prayers for the deceased and the family’s helplessness in the aftermath of Jamil, Anas, Subha, and Abeer’s deaths.
Whereas almost all sources attributed the deaths to Israeli aircraft bombing, Al Jazeera Egypt cited the cause as being Israeli shelling. Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the bombing to Israeli forces.
The names of the victims have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on July 24, 2024.
The incident occured at approximately 11:30 am local time.
The victims were named as:
