Airwars assessment
At 9:52 am on Monday morning November 6th, 2023, an artillery shell allegedly launched by the Israeli forces robbed Mahmoud Adel al-Masry of his life and injured nine others who were sheltering in the Khalifa bin Zayed School in the Northern Gaza Beit Lahia project area.
Despite being advised against doing so by his family, Mahmoud al-Masry, also known as Abu Ibrahim, went to the roof of the UNRWA-affiliated school in search of water, but never returned. Among the injured was Mahmoud al-Masry’s son, who stood beside his father on the roof where the missile was reported to have struck. SAFA and Shehab News correspondents report that nine injured civilians were brought to the Indonesian Hospital with Mahmoud al-Masry’s son in critical condition.
Family member Hekmat Alian [al-Masry] posted a condolence message for Mahmoud, writing that Mahmoud’s wife described him as someone who could not calm down and constantly looked for ways to help those around him, since arriving at the Khalifa bin Zayed School which served as a shelter for displaced people.
“He lights a fire for women to cook, reconciles people, plays with children and calms them down, cleans the schoolyard and everywhere, prays with them in congregation, urges them to work, helps and takes initiative, eases their suffering, consoles the sad, and honours the needy. He brings reassurance and peace to their hearts, tells them stories, and everyone gathers around him as if they know that he is a man who will go to heaven.” Mahmoud al-Masry’s brother Muhammad also posted a condolence message for “my brother, my friend and my love” along with a picture of the two in white button-down shirts and Mahmoud’s nephew Ahmed described the grief he was experiencing from losing his uncle and described Mahmoud as “a lover of life, cheerful, and hard-working, fighting in this world for [his] livelihood.”
Mahmoud al-Masry was dearly loved by those around him as described as a friend to young and old. “My brother’s wife who is at [the] school told me that the whole school cried over his departure, young and old, women, men and elders.”
Mahmoud Adel al-Masry’s name was found on the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released July 24th 2024. His age was given as 29 years old in the MoH list, though he appears older in images posted online.
