Airwars assessment
Shortly before 2am on November 18th 2024, four people from the Al-Hassan family, including two children, were reportedly killed and “a number” of others were injured when an alleged Israeli military helicopter bombed tents sheltering internally displaced people in the Al-Attar area of the Mawasi camp in Khan Younis.
Engineer Al-Waleed Khaled Abu al-Hassan, his wife Amani Ali Siam, his son Khaled al-Waleed Abu al-Hassan and his daughter Aseel Khaled Abu al-Hassan were all reportedly killed. Another daughter, Ghazal Khaled Abu al-Hassan, was left injured with “moderate to serious injuries”. They had been displaced from their Nuseirat home “a few days” before they were killed.
Friends and relatives of the victims expressed their grief in social media posts. Al-Waleed Khaled Abu al-Hassan’s cousin, Areej A Daalsa wrote a lengthy tribute on Facebook calling the family “martyrs” and wishing a “healing that leaves no illness” on their daughter Ghazal.
He remembered Al-Waleed as “honorable” and grieved Khaled as a “polite and honorable child” and Aseel as “beautiful”. He shared a picture of Al-Waleed and Khaled wearing matching blue thawbs and another with Khaled wearing a white thawb and Al-Waleed wearing a blue one. He also shared an anonymised picture of Amani and a picture of the Aseel wearing all purple and donning a golden tiara.
Ola Yahya also offered condolences for her “dear […] sister-in-law” and prayed that the children – Khaled and Aseel – be “accept[ed] in the highest ranks with […] the righteous”.
Abo Rakan Siyam, Amani’s cousin, also made a Facebook post asking that “God have mercy” on the family. Hossam Abdullah shared a picture on Facebook featuring Al-Waleed with his son and daughter along with a gift basket and some balloons, seemingly at a graduation or celebration for young Khaled.
The Board of Directors of the Ashkelon People’s Association also extended its condolences, as quoted by Facebook user Adham Matar, who specified that Al-Waleed’s father, sheikh Dr. Khaled Abu al-Hassan had been killed two months prior.
Al Araby News shared a photograph of a volunteer having loaded the family’s shrouded bodies into the boot of a car, presumably to transfer them to a hospital.
Al Ararby correspondent Saleh al-Natour reported that injured people were transferred to field hospitals after the incident.
The Mawasi area was a reported safe zone with many families sheltering in tents there.
Where sources named a belligerent, all pointed to the Israeli military.
The incident occured at approximately 1:30 am local time.
The victims were named as:
