Airwars Assessment
On 4th December 2023, four people were killed and two others were injured by an alleged Israeli strike on the market area/Trans area in Block 6 of Jabalia Refugee Camp in Northern Gaza.
66-year-old Saeed Yousef Ramadan al-Kahlout (Abu Yousef) and his grandchildren 26-year-old Ismail Mohammed Ismail al-Kahlout and 13-year-old Malak Ahmed Mohammed al-Kahlout, as well as 20-year-old Mahmoud Sami Ibrahim al-Kahlout were all killed as a result of the strike. Saeed’s wife, Rahab Mahmoud Rashid al-Kahlout (Umm Mohammed), and son, Mohammed Saeed al-Kahlout, were injured.
A number of news outlets, including Al Jazeera, reported the strike, while “The al-Kahlout family” Facebook page published a post on 6th December mourning the four family members who lost their lives and wishing a safe recovery to Rahab and Mohammed al-Kahlout. In a personalised post for Mahmoud, the page remembered him with “the highest levels of honour and pride” and included a photograph of Mahmoud sporting a maroon suit. A photograph shared of Saeed from the same account showed him wearing a scarf emblazoned with the word ‘Palestine”.
Other members of the family also posted their condolences on social media. On Facebook, Ahmed al-Kahlout wrote that Ismail al-Kahlout had ‘just graduated from university with honours and got engaged’. He also shared a picture of Ismail wearing a suit and smiling at the camera. This picture was accompanied by screenshots of an older Facebook post from Ismail’s father Mohammed al-Kahlout depicting Ismail receiving his university degree. Mohammed wrote that his ‘dear son Ismail’ had received a distinction in his degree and had been amongst the top students in this class. Mahmoud M Elmadhoun posted a picture of himself and Ismail smiling at the camera, in memory of his ‘brother [..] and dear friend’.
Multiple photographs shared by Ana Ba’es showed the “destruction in the Jabalia camp market” wrought by the strike. KhabarNews24 specified that the strike had been carried out by quadcopter; Biet Dojen Al youm described the strike as a “fire belt”.
Names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the third, fifth and sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which were released on April 1st, 2024, June 30, 2024 and September 16, 2024, respectively. The ages of victims have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Shireen Monitor, an organisation which has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
