Airwars Assessment
During the afternoon of November 5, 2023, Ibrahim Mansour (Abu Anas) was injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike that struck his family home in Jabalia Refugee Camp, Northern Gaza. Weeks later, on November 21, Ibrahim died from his injuries.
At the time of the unannounced strike, Ibrahim was the sole occupant of the four-storey house, according to a social media post by his brother, Mohamad Mansour. The strike, which impacted the Mansour family home located next to Al-Khulafa Mosque in the middle of Jabalia Refugee Camp, was confirmed by multiple news and online media sources, including Shehab Agency, Masdar News, and Sout Palestine. According to Mohamad, the force of the blast ejected Ibrahim from the first floor of the home. While he sustained only minor visible scratches and bruises, he was reportedly unable to feel or move the lower half of his body.
Following the strike, Mohamad Mansour reported that his brother, Ibrahim, suffered fractures in the fifth, sixth, and seventh cervical vertebrae. These injuries, in conjunction with the reported loss of sensation and movement in his lower body, require specialist-operated surgery to mitigate the significant risk of permanent lower-half paralysis. As the rest of the family had scattered at the war’s start, Ibrahim was left to be tended by his father, who bathed him and turned “him right and left so that he does not get sores.” Mohamad wrote that his brother was trying to spare him anxiety: “My brother Ibrahim is trying to lie to me with a white lie […] by saying ‘he is fine’, but he is not at all.”
Photos shared show a smiling Ibrahim in a hospital bed, tended by an older man, likely his father. Mohamad prayed for a “miracle to happen and for Ibrahim to undergo an operation to save what can be saved, outside or inside the Strip.” To any person who could help, Mohamad wrote, he would “be very grateful to them and I will dedicate a special prayer to them in the dead of night.”
Weeks later, on November 21, Ibrahim’s friend, Ahmed M Abu Aita, announced Ibrahim’s death. He described Ibrahim as an “integral part of my life.” The two had met in the eighth grade, in 2007, and had remained close since. Dedicated to his religion, Ibrahim had a “kind heart” and was “a loyal friend, a joker, a cheerful person, and a lighthearted person.”
Images posted by Mohamad Mansour show a collapsed residential building reduced to rubble, which was described as “destroyed”.
Where sources identified who was responsible, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military. According to Abo Mayar F Ha, a colleague and friend of the injured victim, the strike occurred without prior warning. The majority of sources referred to the attack as an airstrike while at least one source mentioned shelling.
