Shortly before 6 PM on Thursday, November 7, 2024, Al-Rimal School in Gaza, located on Al-Nasr Street in the western Al Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City, which was reportedly sheltering thousands of displaced individuals, mostly from Beit Hanoun, was allegedly bombed by the Israeli military. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least three identified civilians and up to nine injuries, including two men, with some sources reporting up to six casualties. One individual with a ‘contested’ civilian-militant status was also reported killed.
On Twitter/X, several accounts reported the incident. Twitter/X account of AlQuds Today (@AlqudsT) was the first to report the incident at 6:05 PM, writing about “martyrs” and multiple injuries. @Hadoid_1 tweeted that four people were killed and others injured in the bombing on Al-Nasr Street. @AlMayadeenLive pointed out that Al-Rimal School was sheltering displaced people when it was bombed.
On Facebook, the account of the Safa news agency posted an update stating that the bombing targeted Al-Rimal School, which was sheltering displaced persons, leading to four fatalities and injuries. The user MsdrNews also reported four deaths and described the incident as urgent, specifying the location on Al-Nasr Street.
AlarabyTVNews provided coverage from its correspondent Islam Bakr, detailing the fatalities and injuries. Islam reported the following in the video:
“We are talking about targeting a school that houses thousands of displaced people, most of them from Beit Hanoun, and the result is four martyrs who were transferred to Al-Shifa Hospital. There are also a number of wounded who were injured by an Israeli aircraft that raided the school yard with at least one missile.”
Finally, Palestine Gaza Post reported the death of five people and injuries, while the Facebook account of the news agency Qastal News reported that the death toll rose to six.
A video published on the official account of the Palestine Red Crescent Society showed its crews transferring one dead and nine wounded from the place where the bombing took place, adjacent to Al Rimal Mixed School. In particular, paramedics are seen transporting the bodies of two injured men on stretchers into a hospital.
Mahmoud Abu Zanada Media Platform identified some of the victims, including a 56-year-old man, Omar Saber Mohammed Abu Amsha (Abu Bakr), who was killed alongside his 52-year-old wife, Sherifa Mohammed Ali Abu Amsha (Umm Bakr), and two other men – their relative, 37-year-old Mohammed Othman Saber Abu Amsha (Abu Malik), and Mohammed Fayeq Al-Kafarna.
Basel Alkfarneh’s post expressed personal grief over the loss of Omar Saber Abu Amsha and his wife, and referred to them as family friends and good neighbours. Facebook user Muhammad Nasser Abu Ahmed also called Abu Bakr a “struggling brother” in his tribute, which can refer either to political or military activities. Based on these facts, Airwars considers Omar Abu Amsha as having a contested civilian-militant status until further information comes to light.
Where possible, the ages of victims have been found by cross-checking names against lists of fatalities shared online by Shireen Monitor, an organisation which has a list of “Martyrs of Palestine” from 2023 onward.
Abu Ahmed added an image of the late Abu Bakr – an elderly man with a broad face, deep-set dark eyes, a thick white beard, wearing a white shirt and a red-white keffiyeh.
Abu Zain mourned the perished members of the Abu Amsha family: “With a heart full of pain, sadness and brokenness, we mourn our martyred uncle, the honorable Omar Saber Abu Amsha “Abu Bakr” and his wife, Sharifah Muhammad Abu Amsha “Umm Bakr”, and our dear, beloved, and well-mannered cousin Muhammad Othman Abu Amsha “Abu Malik” Goodbye, my beloved, to the gardens of eternity with the righteous and the martyrs…”
Facebook user Abu Alabd wrote a touching tribute to the late Omar Abu Amsha: “The eye indeed sheds tears, the heart grieves, and we are truly saddened by your departure, Abu Bakr. We consider my friend Sheikh Omar Saber Abu Amsha “Abu Bakr” a martyr with Allah Almighty. You have departed in body, but your pure soul still accompanies us and flutters like a bird’s wing above our hearts. Words I say with tears of silence, sadness and pride mixed whenever I mention your name. You were a brother, a good brother, and you left a good impression that will not be forgotten in our souls and the souls of all who knew you.”
Facebook user Abu Fadi emphasized the profound impact of the late Abu Bakr on Gaza’s society, writing “The eyes tear up, and the hearts weep over your departure, my companion on the path, a man we knew in the arenas of reform, and one of the men of Gaza, honor and dignity, and he has an honorable imprint in all the arenas of reform, and everyone bears witness to that.”
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
