Airwars Assessment
During the morning of Saturday, November 4, 2023, an alleged Israeli airstrike hit Al-Bastat Market in the Al-Shujaiya neighbourhood of Gaza City. At least seven civilians, including four children and a woman, were reportedly killed in the strike, with multiple members from the Abu Ajwa and the Abu Jabal families identified among the deceased.
Several sources reported seven deaths, and Adel Ben Abed Al Hami Farahat reported that “most of the victims were children.” Other sources, such as Nabd Al Anbar Al A’an and Ahmed Al Mahmoud Al Shiekh, suggested that dozens of civilians had been wounded or were “under the rubble”, and no injury tolls were provided by sources to clarify.
Twitter/X user @PalinfoAr reported the strike at 9:32 AM, sharing a video with men carrying the bodies of small children reportedly killed in the attack.
Multiple sources, including Moaen Tayseer Daba, Press Abeer Albanna, and Khalil Ibrahim, provided the names of the victims and confirmed that they were all part of the Abu Ajwa and Abu Jabal families.
Belal Abo Ajwa further identified several of the victims as his relatives, referring to his 19-year-old cousin Abdul Rahman Tariq Abu Jabal and his one-year-old niece Kinda Muhammad Moeen Abu Jabal as killed in the attack. He also mentioned his cousins, siblings 32-year-old Abdullah Wael Hussein Abu Jabal and 13-year-old Mahmoud Wael Hussein Abu Jabal, as well as a five-year-old named Batoul Muhammad Wael Abu Jabal, a 28-year-old woman named Duaa Rabah Abu Ajwa, and a seven-year-old boy named Sham Muhammad Nahed Abu Ajwa, lamenting their deaths.
Majdi Emad Abed, Nabd Al Anbar Al A’an, and AHmed Al Mahmoud Al Shiekh shared images of the strike’s aftermath, showing the building that had been destroyed, reduced to piles of rubble and smoke as people searched through the site.
Meanwhile, footage shared by social media accounts like @humanbeing1982i, @khalediskef, and Press Abeer Albanna showed people carrying the bodies of children. Hanan Medhat described the devastation, stating, “The heart melts from the horror of the crimes.”
All names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released nine lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the third ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on April 1, 2025.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
