At 10:38 a.m. on November 11, 2023, the Palestinian Ministry of Interior and National Security reported an alleged Israeli airstrike that hit a house inhabited by citizens belonging to the Shaheen family in the new town of Abasan, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. The strike resulted in the killing of a 35-year-old woman, Faten Awad Abdel Rahman Shaheen, and the injury of at least one other civilian.
Omar Salman reported on Facebook that the strike killed one civilian and injured one, without providing their identities. Social media posts by family and friends helped to identify the victim as Faten Awad Abdel Rahman Shaheen.
Reportedly the woman was injured first and later died of her injuries, as Nermin Hassan wished a speedy recovery for Faten Shaheen, describing her as a “kind and affectionate girl” who “used to call her every day, send her messages and bring her to work”. Mohamed Shaheen wrote about the death of Faten, who was his cousin.
Lhoma Shaheen wrote on Facebook that people around the house thought the house was empty at the time of the incident, but that after losing track of her aunt, they realized she had been killed in the airstrike while returning home.
Faten’s name has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released a number of lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, the name of the victim was matched to the second “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on January 7, 2025.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
