Airwars Assessment
On December 7, 2023, at least four civilians, all of whom were members of the Al-Razeq family, were reportedly killed when Qasr al-Basha (Al-Basha Palace) was bombed. Wegdan Khaled Abd al-Razeq (al-Ramlawi) was reportedly killed alongside her three children: Amal Sayyed Abed al-Razeq (12 years old), Amira Sayyed Abed al-Razeq (11 years old), and Adham Sayyed Abed al-Razeq (9 years old).
Posting to Facebook on December 7, 2024, Sayed paid tribute to his Wegdan and their three children, writing “On this day last year, God chose my wife and children as martyrs.” He goes on to name his wife, two daughters, and his son, followed by a line in which he writes “separation is difficult, but it is God’s will and He owns everything”. Sayed closed the post with a prayer, writing “To God we belong and to Him we shall return. Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds”.
Sayed’s words were accompanied by an image in which Amal, Amira, and Adham are centered in the middle, with the words “martyrs of the battle of Al-Aqsa flood” overlaid followed by “Thursday, December 07, 2023”. The photo of the three children is backdropped by an image of the Dome of the Rock which stands within the Al-Haram al-Sharif compound in Jerusalem, the same compound as Al-Aqsa Mosque, as well as an image of the Bab al-Silsila Minaret, which is one of Al-Aqsa Mosque’s four minarets. An image of a woman, presumably Wegdan, is overlaid on the image of the Dome of the Rock. Above the images is Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155 in the Quran), which reads “And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.”
A comment from Reem Sameer, shared to the last post on Wegdan’s personal Facebook account confirmed that Wegdan was no longer alive. The comment, left on December 30th, 2024 reads “May God have mercy on you, my aunt Wajdan”. She goes on to write “Did you all meet together in Paradise? Even my father went with you”, closing the comment with “May God have mercy on you, my heartaches”.
Where possible, Airwars is matching names to individuals whose deaths were included on the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released seven lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, all four members of the Al-Razeq family were matched to the seventh ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on October 23, 2024.
