Airwars Assessment
At around 6 AM on the morning of May 30th, at least one civilian was reportedly killed, and others injured, after members of the Israel Defense Forces allegedly opened fire on a crowd of people heading toward the U.S. aid distribution center by the Netzarim Corridor. The incident reportedly occurred north of Al-Bureij Camp in the Central Gaza Strip.
At 7 AM local time, @Sa7atPlBreaking posted to Twitter/X, writing “The occupation army fires live ammunition and smoke bombs at citizens near the aid distribution center in the Netzarim site.”
At around 9 AM, @quds_feed wrote that “Martyrs and several injuries as a result of the occupation forces’ fire north of Al-Bureij camp”. Large numbers of people were reportedly in the area, and heading to the US aid distribution point in Netzarim.
“Citizens were surprised by the presence of the occupation army near the aid distribution center” according to a post shared to Twitter/X by user @AJArabic. In an accompanying video, Al Jazeera correspondent Ashraf Abu Amra added that the soldiers near the aid distribution points opened fire “directly” on the civilians seeking aid. Ashraf went on to say that “Several civilians were injured and rushed to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital and Al-Awda Hospital. Smoke and sound bombs were also used.” The video was reshared by @AJA_Palestine.
Another video, shared by @AlarabyTV, said that people were traveling on Salah Al-Din road, toward Netzarim, when the shooting happened. The accompanying caption confirmed that civilians were wounded in the shootings.
A post shared by @Wesamaf, says that “starving civilians flocked to the American distribution center in Netzarim, in the central Gaza Strip, only to be met with bullets!” Posting just before 7 AM local time on the 20th, Wesam added that already, Al-Aqsa and Al-Awda hospitals had received 20 injuries, “ including one critical case, as a result of direct targeting by Israeli quadcopters that opened fire on civilians.”
Around the same time, @livequds posted to Twitter/X, quoting local sources in saying “20 wounded after the occupation forces opened fire on them north of Al-Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip while they were heading to the US aid distribution point in Netzarim.”
Another post, shared to Twitter/X by @AlqadmAlthar, said that “Armed American mercenaries throw grenades at Palestinians seeking aid at the Netzarim crossing, run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.” Accompanying the post is a video in which people are seen standing against a fence in a largely raised area. After a few moments, the videographer and those in the area begin to run, as small explosions and plumes of smoke pop up in the area.
As this post shared by @AlqadmAlthar did not explicitly mention civilian harm resulting from the grenade throwing, and other reports explicitly said that people were shot by members of the Israeli military, this report has not affected the incident’s strike status, which is a grade in confidence in harm attribution. This will be updated should additional information become available. It has still been included in the relation to this incident as the video was reportedly filmed on the same day and in the same area as the reported harm, and as such, gives context to the broader events of the day.
Similarly, another post, shared by @mohammedhaniya, provides context. In the post, Mohammed wrote “Once again today, thousands of people headed to the aid distribution point in the Netzarim area. Large numbers went at dawn to collect their daily bread. The result: The occupation forces opened fire on them, wounding several of them, and they returned without food parcels.”
The name of the civilian killed, and any others injured, were not immediately available via open sources. This assessment will be updated if more precise information emerges.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the responsibility to the Israeli military.
