Last Updated: August 13, 2025

On Saturday, June 14th, 2025, before 2:00 p.m., at least 12 civilians, including one child, were killed and 50 or more civilians were injured during an alleged Israeli naval bombardment while waiting for the distribution of humanitarian aid near the Zikim crossing at the Al-Sudaniya area, northwest of the Gaza Strip.

The names of four people reportedly killed in the attack were identified by local sources: 19-year-old Ibrahim Hatem Abu Zer, 52-year-old Nael Tayseer Ahmed al-Louh (Abu Mohammad), 61-year-old Jamal Abd al-Rahman Hassan al-Khatieb (Abu Ibrahim), and a young boy named Qusai Ibrahim al-Arouq.

Information regarding the deceased was reported throughout the day of the event and the following day, as family members and friends of the deceased used Facebook to express their grief and share condolences.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the tenth “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza” list, which was released on July 16, 2025, and the ages of Nael and Jamal were found based on the MoH list. The age of Ibrahim was found by cross-checking his name against lists of fatalities shared online by Genocide in Gaza, which has a list of the names of “martyrs” from Israeli forces and includes the name of the victim, their age, their date of death, and the “circumstances of martyrdom.”

Muhammad Abu Zer Hanno mourned his brother Ibrahim Hatem Abu Zer in a Facebook post, recalling that the last thing he said to his brother was that he was proud of him, and thanking God that his final words were words of pride and appreciation. The post included a photo of two young boys laughing, both wearing identical black hoodies, with their arms around each other. Other family members, such as Ťasneem [Abu Zer], Mohammad Abu Zer, Innocent Dreams and Smood Maze,n posted tributes on Facebook, accompanied by an image of a dark-haired, bearded young man dressed in black, smiling casually in a street setting. Likewise, longtime friends such as Wadih Ayad and Montaser Abu Ajeena or the Beit Lahiya Sons Association extended their condolences to Ibrahim’s family.

Friends and relatives of Nael Tayseer al-Louh (Abu Mohammad), a resident of Beit Lahiya also turned to social media to mourn the passing of their loved one. Among those he left behind were Nader Salah Abu Jarad, Mãhmôûď Ķàfîñã, Abu Khader al-Louh (The Chosen One Abu Khader al-Louh), Umm Mohammad al-Louh, Mohamed Kharoob and Mahmoud al-Louh Abu Malek. The majority of posts featured a photo of Abu Mohammed, a black-haired man with grey highlights and a thick moustache, dressed in a blue shirt and gazing softly into the camera.

Qusai Ibrahim al-Arouq, another identified casualty, was a resident of Al-Shati Camp. According to a Facebook post by Mohammad F. Awadallah, the boy had joined his brother Ahmed to search for bread when he was killed in the bombardment. He was supposed to be buried the next day in front of his house near Ghaben Café. A photo attached shows young Qusai with short black hair, sitting on a tire and wearing jeans, a brown shirt, and white sneakers.

A list of identified casualties was published by Mohammad Awad (Khalefalkatea) and Hamla Kaddour on Facebook. The latter included a (from @qadeyah1’s X/Twitter account reposted) picture collage featuring images of the deceased, including those previously described. Jamal Al Khatieb (Abu Khatieb) appears in a close-up photo: a black-haired man with a moustache, dressed in a white shirt and brown jacket. Both lists also mentioned another victim. No further details were found about these individuals.

A video posted by Al-Jazeera Journalist Moath Kahlout and reposted by Facebook users Ayu Sarah and Writer Elham Masameh showed masses of civilians desperately trying to escape a bombardment, moving along the coast between collapsed buildings as smoke ascends behind them.

Most sources place the incident in or near the Al-Sudaniya area, northwest of the Gaza Strip. Mohammad Awad (Khalefelkatea) further mentioned in his Facebook post that the shelling occurred near the Zikim crossing – this indicates that those killed were waiting for aid trucks to pass through. The coastal setting captured in the above-mentioned video provided further indication of the strike’s location.

While various sources referred to the incident as an artillery shelling or bombardment, the majority attributed the attack specifically to naval gunfire or strikes carried out by gunboats.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the bombardment to the Israeli military.
