On April 13, 2025, 30-year-old Ahmed Muhammad Abu Mohsen (Abu Jamal) was killed by an alleged Israeli drone strike shortly before 3 a.m. The strike hit tents housing displaced persons in the al-Mawasi area, northwest of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Safa News reported at 3 a.m. that Ahmed Abu Mohsen had been killed in an Israeli drone strike on a tent housing displaced persons in the Al-Mawasi area.

A month prior to this killing, AhlulBayt News Agency reported Ahmed Abu Mohsen lost both his legs because of an Israeli strike. Abu Mohsen told the agency, “I was walking to the mosque in Rafah when Israeli forces targeted me.” While reporting on the killing, Quds News Network reported, “Despite his injuries, he had continued teaching students the Holy Quran.” Multiple sources referred to him as a “preacher.”

Multiple media outlets from Palestine, such as PalTimes and Al-Jarmaq News, uploaded images of Ahmed Abu Mohsen interacting with the displaced children on March 5. These were also posted by journalist Hasn Shalan, a journalist at Israel-based media outlet Ynet.

A 90-second clip of Ahmed Abu Mohsen interacting with the children was posted by London-based Shameen Suleman on X.

Muhammad Salim Abu Al-Rus wrote a touching tribute to Ahmed Abu Mohsen, describing him as “a true and tangible model of steadfastness and defiance” and writing that everyone in the Rafah area knew him as “the brother of our beloved friend Abu Omar”. According to Muhammad’s post, Ahmed was killed while he was sleeping. Belal Yehya also wrote about Ahmed’s connection to Rafah, “one of its best youth” and brother of Wael Abu Omar.

On the day of Ahmed’s death and for weeks afterward, Ahmed’s brother Wael expressed the difficulty of losing his younger brother in a way he couldn’t put into words. On June 6th, Wael Abu Omar wrote a heartbreakingly simple post: “First Eid without you, Ahmed” along with an image of Ahmed on the beach in his wheelchair, smiling despite the challenges he had been through.

Where possible, the names of the victims have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released ten lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, Ahmed’s name was matched to the ninth “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on June 23, 2025.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the attack to the Israeli military.
