Journalist Mahmoud Bassem was injured after allegedly being shot by an Israeli quadcopter drone on 28 May 2024.
Though multiple sources reported the injury to Bassem’s shoulder, his friend, writing on Mahmoud’s X account, clarified that the wound was to his left hand. He had “received the necessary treatment” but expected to “continue treatment over the coming days.” He was reported to be stable and “thankfully in good health” and sent his appreciation to well wishers.
On the day of the attack, a friend wrote on @Mahmoud_Bassam8’s Twitter/X account “I am a friend of Mahmoud Bassam and have his account credentials for any emergency. Mahmoud Basser was shot in the shoulder by a quadcopter and will undergo surgery within a few hours. We ask for your prayers for him, and we will keep you updated on any new developments.”
Writing himself two weeks after the strike, Mahmoud posted that his “fingertips that carried the camera to show the truth survived a targeted bombing, and the treatment continues for several more weeks.” He planned to “continue my media message” and “thank[ed] everyone who asked about [him] during [his] absence.” He included a photograph where both hands are wrapped in gauze.
Multiple sources reported that he was wounded “while covering the Israeli…. aggression on Rafah.” Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the attack to the Israeli military.
