On 29 August 2025, the young man, 19-year-old fisherman Mohammed Ayman al-Jaabari, was reportedly killed by gunfire allegedly from an Israeli military ship off the coast of Al-Qarara to the northwest of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

The age of Mohammed was found on the website Genocide in Gaza, which has a list of “martyrs” of Israeli forces.

The death of Mohammed was reported by multiple news outlets, including Safa News and Shehab News Agency. Family and friends of Mohammed also reported his death via social media. His cousin, Abu Yahya Hassouna, posted on Facebook the report that Mohammed was killed due to gunfire from an Israeli ship.

The Khan Younis Post on Facebook claimed that Mohammed’s boat also sank as a result of the attack. Voice of the South, via Facebook, shared a photo of a small boat heading out to sea in an attempt to recover Mohammed’s body, who had, at the time of the post being published, reportedly been killed two days prior.

Mohammed’s brother, Ibrahim al-Jaabari, posted multiple messages of mourning to Facebook, including one on the one-month anniversary of Mohammed’s killing. He said Mohammed was everything to him and that upon his passing, he had left behind “pain in our hearts and a tear in our eyes that will never be erased.” Basil Sawalhi, also on Facebook, referred to Mohammed as a “boy of the waves and master of the seas” and shared an image of him wearing a green beach lifeguard t-shirt.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to ships belonging to the Israeli Military. According to the website Genocide in Gaza, the naval bombardment occurred without prior warning.
