Airwars Assessment
At approximately 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, Mohsen Sharifi and his wife, Fahimeh Sharifi, were killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike alongside their children, 13-year-old daughter Fatemeh Sharifi and nine-year-old son Mojtaba Sharifi. The strike reportedly hit two civilian cars in Najafabad in the Isfahan province. In addition to the Sharifi family, their travel companions, Moslem Ta’ati and his pregnant wife, 29-year-old Najmeh Karimi, were also killed.
According to khabarfoori.com, Akbar Salehi, Deputy Head of Security and Law Enforcement of the Isfahan Governorate, stated “in this brutal crime that occurred last night, a pregnant woman who was only two weeks away from giving birth to her child, along with her husband, were burned to death by the child-killing [Israeli] regime on the way from Khomeini Shahr to Najafabad”. Salehi added, “the child-killing and criminal [Israeli] regime unjustly and innocently martyred seven Iranian citizens, including two women, two men, two children aged 10 and 13, and an eight-month-old fetus”. Per Airwars’ methodology, as the fetus had not been born yet, their death has been registered as part of Najmeh’s death.
The Etemad newspaper wrote that if Najmeh had not been killed in the war, she would have been hugging her unborn daughter Mahlin in mid-July. But the war did not spare her. In two weeks, Najmeh, who was also called Zahra by her relatives, would have given birth. Najmeh Karimi had a sewing diploma and was a housewife, while Moslem Ta’ati was a municipal worker. They had been married for about 10 years.
Najmeh was supposed to go home after giving birth to take care of her and her newborn. Najmeh’s bed was in the corner of the house, and the Sharifi family was ready and willing for Najmeh to go from the hospital to her friends’ house instead of her sick mother’s house.
Additionally, the Etemad newspaper stated that Najmeh and Moslem had companions in the Sharifi family. The Sharifi family, their neighbors and family friends became their travelling companions. The Sharifi family, with their two teenage children, Fatemeh and Mojtaba, along with Najmeh and Moslem, were reportedly killed at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and “the lives of seven dear ones were taken at the peak of their youth.”
In a video interview with the Rokna news outlet, Fatemeh and Mojtaba’s teachers emphasised their morality, humility, and decency. In particular, Fatemeh’s teacher, with tears in her eyes, recalled a time when the girl refused to eat the cake because she did not pay for it: “The children had a birthday party for me and had prepared a cake. When the cake was distributed, Fatemeh did not eat it. When I asked her why, she said that since she did not have a share in buying it, she would not allow herself to eat it. She had such a responsible and conscientious personality.”
Another teacher recalled how Mojtaba commented on the notion of sacrifice. Addressing his teacher, Mojtaba had said: “Ms. Azaad, sacrifice means my father who goes to work early in the morning and works hard until night so that my sister and I have nothing to lack.”
The school students also remembered their classmate Fatemeh with sadness, describing her as a “humorous, kind, compassionate, and moral” girl.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the attack to the Israeli military.
