On Friday August 5th, the Israeli Defense Forces declared that they conducted an airstrike against Tayseer Jabari, described as the commander of Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades in Northern Gaza. Local sources reported that the strike was on a 12 story residential building in Gaza City, Palestine Tower, in the Gaza Strip, and resulted in the death of a civilian and the injury of “dozens” of civilians, including five children.
Some sources said that “dozens” of civilians were injured in the incident, including a lawyer and a cleaner, with one report noting that the cleaner injured later died from his injuries. A local source, Mohammad, on Facebook, reported the “injury of my dear brother and the beloved of my heart, Amin Al-Rifi, Abu Muhammad and his children, Sakhr, Dhikira, Mahmoud, Muhammad and Wael.”
The incident also reportedly killed two combatants: Taysir Mahmoud Mohammed al-Ja’abari, aged 52, an Al-Quds Brigades Commander, the military arm of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and his bodyguard, Salamah Muhareb Abdullah Aabed, aged 39.
There were civilian casualties reported by local sources such as @PalinfoAr, @westasia24 and @ShehabAgency which uploaded photos of injured civilians, and reported that there were “reports of injuries”. @TheLensPost reported that “dozens of civilians were injured as a result of the Israeli bombing of Burj Palestine.”
Ayyam News specified “the injury of more than thirty citizens of the tower’s residents, including children and women” including “a large number of the families of Abu Ramadan, Kanon and other families.” In addition to civilian harm, the bombing also destroyed two residential apartments on the sixth and seventh floors, and inflicted damage to many other apartments including the ” the apartment that houses the office of Al-Ayyam newspaper located on the second floor”. Images from @Middle_Eastnow show at least one woman being treated for injuries following the strike.
Al Jazeera Mubashar reported on Facebook that a surveillance camera documented the moment a cleaner was injured inside a shop adjacent to the Palestine Tower, when a wall fell on the worker. Erm news reported that he was believed to have died after sustaining injuries from the collapsed building.
One young man, Faisal Rabia’a reported on Facebook, “Praise be to God, who saved me after I suffered several injuries and bruises in different parts of my body as a result of the targeting of the Palestine Tower on Shuhada Street, and thank God I was discharged from the hospital safely.” Another local source reported that Faisal Rabia’a is a lawyer and was transferred to Al-Shifa hospital for treatment, in a report from the Central Lawyers’ Office. One source, Almaktab Alharki Post, referred to him as “the lawyer Faisal Arhim”.
One resident of the tower, who still had blood on his clothes, told Al Jazeera “We’ve just had Friday lunch and my children were playing. Suddenly, a huge explosion hit the tower in which we live. We ran away. The sound was massive. We were very shocked as the place is full of civilians. I saw many casualties that were evacuated.”
Gaza-based author and activist Rana Shubair, who lives in the al-Remal neighbourhood, told Al Jazeera she heard four to five loud bangs and “I was asleep and found myself waking up running, wondering what happened. There was panic in the area, people running. You can imagine … the amount of horror that this caused for the people living in the building. There were children playing … this was something really unpredictable for us.”
The Israeli Defense Forces released a statement acknowledging that they carried out the strike after the incident that “A short while ago, the IDF targeted a senior commander of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organization. IDF fighter jets targeted Tayseer Jabari, the senior PIJ Commanding Officer of the terrorist group’s Northern Gaza Division. Jabari was entrusted in making many decisions in the PIJ and carried out many anti-tank missile attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers recently….Jabari was a senior commander in the PIJ and held a number of positions in the terrorist organization, including as the Head of Operations. He was entrusted in making many decisions inside the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organization, and was responsible for multiple attempted terror attacks against Israeli civilians.”
