At least one civilian, a man, was reported killed and up to 14 others, including three women, were reported injured in alleged Israeli airstrikes on a home in Jabalia refugee camp on August 7th, 2022. One other man who was identified as being a member of Al-Qassam Brigades was also killed in the attack.

According to Al Mezan, at 9am on August 7th, an artillery shell hit the home of Fathi Abdelfattah Abu Jaser in Jabaliya refugee camp, resulting in the killing of Diaa Zuhair al-Borai, 32, and the injury of six others, including three women, in addition to material damage to homes.

@PalinfoAr put the number of casualties at Jabaliya camp at eight without determining if they were killed or injured. @NewpressPs identified two people as being killed and seven others as being injured in the attack while @P_E_A2021 reported eight injuries. Palsawa News quoted ambulance crews who confirmed that “the bodies of an elderly female [killed] and another [dead] had been recovered.”

High casualty figures were provided by @Mansorryaan, who tweeted that three people were killed and 13 others were wounded when Abu Jaser’s house was struck, and Khbr Press, which stated that two people were killed and 14 others were injured.

@Mansorryaan also provided the names of injured civilians that arrived at the Indonesian Hospital: Majdi Fathi Abu Jaser, his father Fathi and his mother Suhaila (Suhaila Abdalati Al Talouli) , and the citizen Nidal Akram Qads, who are all in good condition. The General Youth Association of Al Abu Aita, Abu Jacir and Ziadeh posted on Facebook that Ramez, the son of Fathi, was lying in the Indonesian hospital getting surgery to remove the shrapnel from his body. Eslam posted on Facebook that Suhaila is a member of the Women’s Committee in the area of the martyr Kamal Naji.

A tweet from @fofamasoud1 also identified Iman Abu Jaser as being injured, adding that her family (she is the daughter of Fathi and Suhaila) was also injured and @RaghdaA251 reported that their neighbor’s daughter, Iman Abu Jaser and her mother are in intensive care following the attack. Iman reportedly suffered an eye injury and later lost an eye. Kawthar posted on Facebook that Iman’s sister Sabreen Abu Jaser was also injured, and that they were in serious condition.

Shms News reported that Ahmed Muhammad Afana, 31 years old and Diaa Zuhair Al-Borai, 30 years old were killed. A tweet from @samah_hasani identified Ahmed as being a member of the Al-Qassam Brigades: @adham922 tweeted that “Al-Qassam Brigades celebrates the martyrdom of the Mujahid / Ahmed Afana, who was martyred in the targeting of a house for the Abu Jasser family in Jabalia camp.”

@Alresalahpress tweeted that Diaa, one of the civilians killed, was preparing himself for marriage and selling fruit when he was killed and video footage obtained by Mondoweiss showed that Diaa Al-Boraai was cleaning the street near the entrance of his home when the airstrike hit. Mondoweiss also reported that Diaa suffered from a physical disability from an injury he sustained during protesting, and had undergone over 30 surgeries on his leg and foot.

@maqadema reported that Ahmed was killed when he ran to save one of his neighbours after their house was hit and during the rescue operation the wall of the house fell on him and killed him. Mondoweiss identified Ahmed as a married man with a family of three kids, ages seven, five, and three, and his father described him as a “faithful, patient, kind, and shy person with good manners,” adding that he was proud that his son died while trying to help people.

@BelalNezar identified the location of the home that was struck in the attack as being near Al-Tawbah Mosque while Mondoweiss referred to the location as the Birkat Abu Rashed area.

All of the sources that reported on the incident attributed the strike to Israeli aircraft, and Palsawa News added that the strike occurred without warning. Jerusalem Post reported that the IDF did not confirm whether they were responsible for the strike that killed Ahmed Afana.
