Airwars assessment
On October 10, 2023, at 6:30 a.m., an alleged Israeli airstrike hit the home of the Abu Shaaban family near Saraya Square in the Al-Nasr neighborhood north of Gaza City, destroying the family house, killing the entire family of six members, including a woman and four children, and reportedly injuring some civilians.
Twitter/X user @PalinfoAr reported the incident at 7:50 AM. Shehab Agency reported on the incident at 3:21 PM, writing that the strike led to “martyrs” and “injuries” and sharing a video where a huge cloud of smoke can be seen in the distance. According to DCI Palestine, the strike happened at 6:30 AM. Fathi Shaaban emphasized that the strike occurred without prior warning.
It was initially reported by The Palestinian Information Center via Twitter that four people had been killed, though that number later rose to six, according to the agency Defense for Children International Palestine. A video clip posted to Twitter by @Jihane09876 showed a large plume of smoke rising from what appears to be a residential building in the distance.
A middle-aged man Nazir Shawqi Shaaban (Abu Omar) was killed alongside his wife, Enas Riyad Shaaban, and their four children: 11-year-old Omar Nazir Shaaban, 10-year-old Ghada Nazir Shaaban, seven-year-old Batoul Nazir Shaaban, and one-year-old Ahmed Nazir Shaaban.
Nazir Shaaban was a medical and laboratory analysis specialist. The Medical Analysis Syndicate in Palestine mourned the loss of their colleague, Nazir Shaaban “Abu Omar”, writing that Nazir was one of “its honorable founders” and offered a prayer that he and his family “be accepted in the gardens of bliss”
In a Facebook post, Fathi Shaaban announced: “The death of my sister Enas Riyad Shaaban, her husband, who is my cousin, Nathir Shawqi Shaaban, and their children Omar, Ghada, Batoul, and Ahmed were martyred”. The post was accompanied by several photos, including one in which Nazir has his arm around a young. Another was an image of a grinning infant, and another that showed two young girls with their arms around each other, wearing dresses and smiling. These family photos were juxtaposed with the last image which depicts the destroyed exterior of a residential building.
Saaed Saker offered prayers for her cousin, Nazir Shaaban and his family in a Facebook post, writing that the family members “are alive in the sight of their Lord”. The post is paired with a portrait of Nazir, as well as an image of five bodies wrapped in white fabric.
In her own post, Basma Shaaban mourned the loss of her brother, writing that he was “my soul, my support, my friend”, and that Nazir was “more generous than all of us”.
Twitter/X user @Mousjrrv shared an emotional video of a Palestinian man from the Shaaban family who learned that he just lost his entire family. The man is seen in the video crying and being supported by other men.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
