On October 9, 2023, 33-year-old Palestinian journalist Angham Ahmad Adwan was reportedly killed and her relative, Wissam Ahmad Adwin, was injured following an alleged Israeli airstrike that struck a residential home in Jabalia, located in the northern Gaza Strip.
Angham, a reporter for the Libyan TV channel February, had recently returned to Gaza from Libya and was reportedly staying with her family at the time of the strike. Her death was confirmed by her channel as well as other media outlets, including Ahram Online, Anadolu Agency, and Palestine Chronicle, all of which stated that the strike had hit her home in Jabalia.
The February Channel released a condolence post that included an image of destroyed buildings and a formal statement, reading “February Channel mourns the passing of its colleague, journalist Angham Ahmad Adwan, after her martyrdom in Gaza City due to the continuous bombing by [Israeli] forces.” In another tribute, her framed photo is presented.
Angham’s body was wrapped in a patterned funeral shroud, and her blue PRESS flak jacket was placed on top. A photo from the scene, credited to photojournalist Muath al-Yemeni, shows mourners standing over her body. This image was widely circulated on social media and reflected the reverence with which her peers and community held her.
Tributes were also shared by her friends and family, including a black-and-white collage showing Angham as a young woman, overlaid with mourning text. Angham had been known for her work with Al-Raed, Panorama, and Salam TV channels in addition to February, and was praised as a dedicated media professional. Several posts described her death as a “loss for the Palestinian media community.” In shared images, Angham wears a light-colored headscarf under palm trees. She looks directly into the camera with a soft expression.
Her cousin Asem Adwan confirmed her death on social media and added that Wissam Ahmad Adwan, another relative, had suffered a head injury in the strike.
Angham was first reported killed by Al Jazeera, which documented her death as occurring on 9 October. Subsequent news platforms picked up news of her death in February of the following year, which accounts for erroneous reports that she was killed in February.
Angham’s name has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released a number of lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, the name was matched to the fourth “Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza”, which was released on April 30, 2024.
All sources that identified a belligerent attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
