Airwars assessment
Shortly before 16:45 on August 1, 2024, at least two civilians, including a child, were killed and at least three civilians, including two children, were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike and/or drone strike on a house belonging to the al-Hawar family in Camp 1, at the beginning of al-Zuhour Street in Nuseirat Refugee Camp, Deir Al Balah, Gaza Strip.
According to social media accounts, an 18-year-old student named Muhammad Abdel Karim al-Assar, and a girl named Mira Muhammad Tayseer al-Saqqa were killed in the strike, while one young man, Hamza Munir Hamdan, was injured and Youssef al-Hawar was either injured or killed.
At 16:45 on August 1, the Palestinian Press Agency (Safa.ps) reported “two martyrs and injuries as Israeli drones bomb a group of citizens in Camp 1 in Nuseirat.” Alghad TV, al-Quds News and al-Ayyam.ps reported two people killed in the strike as well. Providing more specifics regarding the location of the alleged strike, Journalist Mohammad Saeed reported “a reconnaissance missile targeting a group of citizens in front of a house belonging to the al-Hawar family in Camp 1, at the beginning of al-Zuhour Street in the Nuseirat Camp in the middle of the Gaza Strip.“
According to Wafa.ps and El Watan News, which reported a higher death toll, three people were killed in the alleged strike, while social media accounts Mahmoud Abu Sanadeh, journalist, Abu Sameh Abu Mashayekh, and others stated that “the number of martyrs rose to 4” after “Youssef al-Hawar succumbed to his injury.” Later, Facebook user Mohammad Mahmoud clarified that “the young man Youssef al-Hawar, who was thought to have been martyred, is fine in the hospital receiving treatment after being injured.” However, based on this uncertainty, this casualty has been counted in the maximum range for both injuries and deaths. In an image posted by Mahmoud Abu Zanadeh Youssef is pictured in a uniform identified as for Al-Ribat College as Youssef was a student training in security sciences.
While some sources posted on August 1st list Hamza Hamdan as injured, others refer to Hamza Hamdan as a “martyr.” However, on August 2nd, Hiba Allah Hamdan posted on Facebook that Hamza Hamdan “was injured yesterday in a targeting in the Nuseirat camp. He was seriously injured. He needs your prayers” and on August 4th the account Al-Nuseirat Main shared a smiling photo of Hamza wearing a three-piece suit and wrote that “this young man, Hamza Munir Hamdan, son of al-Nuseirat, is under care. We ask you to pray for his speedy recovery. Hamza was injured during a targeting in al-Nuseirat on al-Zuhour Street.” Based on these later sources indicating that Hamza was still alive, he has been counted as injured.
Palestine Voice Radio and a number of other social media accounts shared a video of two small children being treated for injuries at Al-Aqsa Hospital following the strike, with the caption stating “children’s injuries arrive at Al-Aqsa Hospital.”
Online, loved ones mourned those killed and injured in the strike.
Facebook user Ibrahim Alassar posted a photo of his relative Muhammad Abdel Karim al-Assar at the beach and wrote that “half an hour ago, we received news of my nephew, Muhammad [Abdel] Karim Al-Assar, that he is a martyr, may God have mercy on him and make his abode in Paradise.” Attia Ibrahim Nashabet grieved the loss of Muhammad as well, describing him as “a writer, creative, ambitious, and shy.” Commemorating his deceased relative, Mohammad Jameel al-Assar posted photos of the young man as well. In one, he smiles at the camera while wearing sunglasses and in the other, he poses with a taqiyah (prayer cap) on his head. Akram Alassar mourned his brother Muhammad in a Facebook post which described him as a “kind and pure soul.”
Facebook user A.raed Abu Gaddous Abu Amer shared various touching memories of Muhammad, writing: “I often met you in the streets of our camp and you always asked the same question: “Is there hope, Mr. Raed, that we can provide guidance? Ok, what will they do with us? Should we start studying so that we can be ready if the war stops and not delay? For your information, Professor, I studied with my friends, Darwish’s children, before they were martyred, and we finished physics when we arrived with you.. and we intended to continue, but they were martyred, may God have mercy on them. Look, Professor, how much hope has been lost for us this year?”
He continued: “Muhammad was an outstanding student and he dreamed of being among the first in the country.. He had many dreams and goals that he achieved.” Others, including Wail Assar, Ghram al-Assar, Thaer al-Assar, and Akram al-Assar, mourned their beloved Muhammad as well.
Following the strike, Dalal Mughrabi posted on Facebook that “my husband’s cousin, the child Mira al-Saqqa, was martyred in the al-Zuhur area in al-Nuseirat.” Lamar Foad shared pictures of the smiling little girl along with a photo of her small corpse wrapped in a body bag after she was killed. A Facebook account called Joy Kindergarten shared a series of photos of Mira, writing “We are back again to mourn a rose of joy. They were deprived of the most beautiful years of childhood. They are, above all, the present and the future, one of our flowers that have not yet been opened, plucked by the god of the Israeli war on our people at the wrong time, the childhood martyr, daughter of Rawda, joy Mira al-Saqqa.” Other loved ones including Osama Asaqqa and Abdulla F Elzemeli mourned the child’s death as well.
Where possible, names have been matched to the sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on September 15, 2024.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. Most sources indicated that the strike was carried out with a reconnaissance missile, while some stated that was a drone.
The incident occured in the evening.
