Airwars Assessment
On August 1, 2024, two members of the Nofal family, 25-year-old Ali Hassan Nofal and 22-year-old Ismail Ayman Nofal, were killed and at least three civilians were injured in an alleged bombing by the Israeli military on their house located on Al-Mahkama Street in the east of the Nuseirat camp in the Gaza Strip.
Ismail Ayman Nofal was the son of the deceased commander of the Central Brigade (Al-Wusta Brigade) of the Qassam Brigades, Ayman Nofal – killed by an Israeli strike in October 2023. Airwars initially categorised Ismail as a civilian, however this incident was updated on December 17, 2024, after Twitter/X user @AdinHaykin1 notified Airwars of an August 1, 2024 Facebook source posted by Mahmoud Abu Omar, in which Ismail was seen holding a gun and possible military fatigues. Airwars has now changed Ismail’s status from civilian to militant. This is reflected in the incident’s updated belligerent range, which is now listed as “at least one militant killed”.
@Hamzaalnalma1 on X/Twitter posted that two people from the Nofal family were killed, confirmed by other independent posts on social media, such as Saint Petersburg News on Facebook, who established both the location of the family’s home which was destroyed, on Al-Mahkama Street in the east of Nuseirat, as well as the death of the two men. Other posts, such as Alqudsnews.net, ShehabAgency on X/Twitter, and Freeing Gaza on Facebook described the injury of at least three civilians in the reported bombing.
Friends and family members also took to social media to grieve. Twitter/X user @AkhbarOrdon shared an image where a severely destroyed residential building can be seen.
Both names have been matched with the sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza’, released September 15, 2024.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.
