Airwars Assessment
Two civilians were reportedly killed and a number of civilians were injured in an alleged Israeli artillery strike and/or drone strike on a group of people near the Kuwait roundabout in the al-Zeitoun neighbourhood of Gaza City on the morning of Thursday, 1st August 2024.
Family members, community groups and news sources, including Al-Jazeera Palestine, reported that two men had been killed in the alleged Israeli strike. The al-Mahdoun family, writing on Facebook, identified one of the men as Salah Kamal al-Mahdoun.
Paying tribute to Salah Kamal al-Madhoun, the al-Madhoun family posted a photo of him, showing him to be a young man with a closely trimmed beard and glasses.
The second man killed in the incident was identified on Facebook by his sister-in-law Najlaa Nasser, among numerous other sources, as Kamal Jawad al-Kholy. “May God have mercy on my sister’s husband,” wrote Najlaa Nasser, while wishing her sister Umm Jawad al-Kholy “patience over the separation from her husband.”
Meanwhile, a second image circulated online by Al-Jazeera Palestine, among other sources, depicted the two men lying dead on a raised surface. The bodies of the two men were transported to the Baptist Hospital (also known as the al-Ahli Arab Hospital).
In addition to these two reported deaths, sources including the Palestinian Raya Network indicated that numerous others had been injured in the strike, although none of the sources provided specific numbers.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces. While Safa News referred to the strike as “Israeli shelling,” Yani Safak News blamed the incident on a “reconnaissance plane.”
