Airwars assessment
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, one civilian, 28-year-old Tamim Jamal al-Attar, was killed and at least six others were injured in an alleged Israeli airstrike that hit the home of the Al-Attar family in the Sultan area, north of the Gaza Strip, causing the building to collapse.
Initial reports by Safa News Agency indicated that Tamim and six injured civilians were being transported by the Palestinian Red Crescent, though a later Facebook post by Mahmoud Mohammad mentioned that the number of injured had risen to ten.
In a Facebook post, Saqr al-Attar announced, “The martyrdom of the good-natured young man, the cousin Tamim Jamal Al-Attar in the Al-Atara area”. His loss, Saqr wrote, was “a heartache.” Other members of Tamim’s family posted to social media, remembering Tamim as an “honorable young man.” Friend Samran Abdallah al-Attar posted an image of a smiling Tamim with the caption, “In tribute to my beloved, friend and neighbor, cousin Tamim Jamal Attar”. In another post, Dr. Yaser Elattar wrote, “I extend my deepest condolences and sincere feeling and sympathy from my entire family…Asking God Almighty to grant him the highest paradise with his mercy and inspire his family, relatives and lovers with patience and solace”. An image posted to Facebook by Foad Soltaan included a screen capture of a text conversation with the caption, “The last conversation between me and my friend Tamim al-Attar, who was martyred today…May God have mercy on you, Tamim, and make you among the people of Paradise.” In the exchange, Tamim thanked God for the safety of his family and spoke of missing his friend.
One post referred to Tamim as a doctor, though it is unclear whether this was in an educational or medical capacity.
Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
The names of the injured civilians are unknown.
Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the sixth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on September 16, 2024.
The local time of the incident is unknown.
