Airwars assessment
During the morning of October 23rd, 2023, at least 10 civilians were reportedly killed and a number of others were wounded as a result of an alleged Israeli bombing on two houses on Yarmouk Street, in the center of Gaza City, Gaza Strip.
Abu Mustafa Abdel-Al and Sadeq Shaken identified the names of ten people killed: 68-year-old Talal Hassan Abdel-Al (Abu Walid), his two sisters, 65-year-old Basmah Hassan Abdel-Al (Umm Hassan) and Fikria Hassan Abdel-Al (aged 65 according to a BBC report, but listed as age 76 on the Ministry of Health list), and Fikria’s two sons, 42-year-old Munther Nimr Abdel-Al and 44-year-old Mazen Nimer Abdel-Al. Mazen Nimer Abdel-Al’s wife Souma Talal Abdel-Al (also the daughter of Talal Hassan) was reported dead. Mohammed Harmon and Hiba Talal also identified Mazen Nimer Abdel-Al and Souma Khalil Abdel-Al’s son, 19-year-old Abdullah Mazen Abdel-Al and two daughters, 22-year-old Lana Mazen Abdel-Al and 8-year-old Yara Mazer Abdel-Al, as well as Talal’s 43-year-old daughter, Ibtisam Talal Abdel-Al, among those killed. A post from Abu Mustafa Abdel-Al mentioned that five of Souma’s children had been killed in the strike, but did not provide the additional names.
Hiba Talal Abdel-Al posted messages and images of her father Talal, of whom she said “there is no man like a father, and no father like my father,” as well as of her aunts Basmah and Fikria, and the rest of her family members. According to Hiba, her father Tala was preparing for Ramadan when he was killed. Abu Malek Abdel-Al also mourned the loss of their siblings Talal, Basmah, and Fikria, along with their children and grandchildren.
The BBC wrote about the life of Fikria Hassan Abdel-Al who was a popular tailor in Gaza City’s Radwan district. Fikria’s daughter Nevine told the BBC “I remember when we used to have our house full of brides-to-be and bridesmaids who would come to my mother’s place to have a fitting. She was exceptionally talented.” According to Nevine, Fikria “was devoted to her family and would host large weekly gatherings. But Nevine says her mood had been severely affected by the escalation in the conflict: “She told me in our last phone call: ‘I’m very depressed and exhausted from what seems to be an endless war’.” Nevine was sheltering at a friend’s house at the time of the strike, while her mother and other family members were sheltering in the house which was hit by the airstrike.
A post from Saeed Abdel-Al mentioned that in addition to the nine members of the Abdel-Al family who had been killed, “A number of people were missing under the rubble of Abu Walid’s house”.
Many local news sources and social media reported on the bombing including Al Jazeera, Palestine Post and Awdeh Channel which said “a number of people were killed and wounded” as a result of the bombing. However, none specified how many people had been injured.
@NEWS24_KW tweeted a video of the effects of the destruction and rubble of several houses on Yarmouk Street and a post from Abu Mustafa Abdel-Al included images in memory of those killed.
