At dawn on Monday, the 23rd of October, 2023, 18-year-old Adnan Jihad Muhammed Abu Baraka was reportedly killed by an alleged Israeli shelling. The X/Twitter account ‘Martyrs of Gaza’ stated that Adnan Jihad Baraka was killed “in the Israeli shelling on Gaza”.
Several online messages of condolence were shared via Facebook by his friends and acquaintances, with many containing commemorative photos featuring a young man, smiling at the camera.
The exact location of the “shelling” that reportedly killed Adnan Jihad Baraka was not stated within the online sources. However, many of those who posted messages mourning his death were residents of Rafah, according to the information available on their Facebook profiles.
Adnan Baraka was born on March 23, 2005, according to a Facebook post by Qadour Mansouri. The messages of condolence reveal that, as a keen football player, he was a member of a youth club located in Rafah. A Facebook post by Qadour Mansouri, made on the 23rd of December, 2023, stated that “He loved football, was a professional player, and in every match had to be with the Rafah Youth Club”.
According to the X/Twitter account “Martyrs of Gaza”, Adnan was the eldest son of his family and loved his parents very much. He completed high school with a GPA of 77.7, and “the joy of his success was the most beautiful moment in his life, marking the beginning of many dreams.”
The same source described Adnan as having dreams of traveling and wrote that Adnan’s friends “testify to his good nature and character.”
“Martyrs of Gaza” also posted a message from Adnan’s sister who said: “… With a smiling face and a kind heart, his loss has shattered my heart, but my solace is that he is in heaven, being happy.”
Facebook user Fadi Hamada mourned his death, calling him a “dear student”. Mahmoud Al-Dabbas shared his touching testimony, speaking of Adnan as of “soul mate, friend and brother.”
The name of Adnan Jihad Muhammed Abu Baraka has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza released on October 26th, 2023.
The Martyrs of Gaza Twitter/X account and the Palestinian Ministry of Health list of fatalities attributed Adnan’s death to the Israeli military. Therefore, Airwars has catagorised this strike status as “likely strike”.
