Airwars assessment

On the evening of October 30th 2023, a 59 year-old engineer Ramadan Abu al-Rous (also known as “Abu Mahmoud”), was killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Abu al-Rous family home opposite al-Banna al-Nuseirat bakery in al-Nuseirat, Gaza Strip.

At 18:53 on October 30th Twitter/X user @Pal_newsps reported an alleged strike on “the house of Abu Mahmoud Abu al-Rous, opposite al-Banna al-Nuseirat bakery” and that “ambulances are heading to the location.” At 19:20, the Palestinian Press Agency (Safa.ps) quoted the Gaza Ministry of Interior, reporting that “[Israeli] aircraft bombed a house…for the “Abu al-Rous” family in al-Nuseirat in the Central Governorate.” Soon after, @Pal_newsps reported the “citizen martyrdom [of] Ramadan Abu al-Rous (Abu Mahmoud)” as a result of the alleged attack. Other sources, including Twitter/X users @PalinfoAr, @YouthGoDigital and @AlQastalps reported the alleged strike on the Abu al-Rus home that day.

In the aftermath of the alleged Israeli attack, numerous loved ones paid their respects to “Hajj” Ramadan Abu al-Rous. On Facebook, Mohammed Humeid wrote “now we are saddened by the martyrdom of the father of our beloved, our brother, our friend, and our companion, Muhammad Abu al-Rous, Hajj Ramadan Abu al-Rous.”

Roa Ramadan shared a photo of her father, a bald man with thick eyebrows, wearing glasses and dressed in a suit, writing that “with pride, I mourn my dear father, the martyr Hajj Engineer Ramadan Muhammad Abu al-Rous…May God accept you, my beloved heart. Today we mourn and tomorrow we will mourn, God willing. Daughter of the martyr.”

Relative Msulimanrr86 expressed grief about the family’s recent losses, writing “my beloved uncle M. Ramadan Abu al-Rous is a martyr, God willing, days after the martyrdom of my uncle’s sister, Abdul Mohsen Abu al-Rous.”

The name of Ramadan Abu al-Rous was reconciled with published Palestinian Ministry of Health lists released after October 26th and before July 2024. With thanks to journalist Alexandre Horn from CheckNews for identifying relevant sources, and Data Tech for Palestine for centralising the datasets.
