Airwars assessment

On Wednesday, November 1st 2023, twenty-nine-year-old journalist Majd Fadl Muhammad Arandas, a member of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and a reporter for the Al-Jamahir News website, was killed when an area near his house in the Nuseirat Refugee Camp was bombed in an alleged Israeli airstrike.

According to a post by the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), he was the 26th journalist to be killed in the war.

The Alquds news network shared the story as told by his father, Fadl Arandas. According to his father, Majd had just returned home after collecting vegetables from a store. Before the airstrike occurred, he was talking to his mother, asking what they wanted to eat. Suddenly, a loud noise rang out. Hearing this, Majd ran to the top of the building to see what had happened. Upon returning to his family, he said, “There are people who need help,” and left to assist them. A few minutes later, a second explosion was heard. Fadl Arandas ran out to find his son and discovered his son’s body, struck by shrapnel in the head.

Following the news of his death, friends and family took to social media to mourn their loss. Mohanad Elhour described the loss of “the beautiful groom, beloved of the eye… my cousin and my dear beloved, my heart.” Bassam Fathi Harun noted in a Facebook post that Majd Fadl Arandas was a “beloved friend” with “good morals.” Others shared religious messages, such as “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return”.

Family relatives and friends shared different images of the late Majd, including a black and white headshot with a small parrot sitting on the young man’s shoulder.

In February 2024, Majd’s mother, Amal Arandas, posted on Facebook, stating, “Today you have been absent from me for three months. Oh God, I entrust you to my son (Majd) in his grave alone, bearing witness that there is no god but God and that Muhammad is your servant and messenger.”

She posted again on March 29, 2024, in a memorial post for her son’s birthday, saying, “Today marks the birth of a piece of my soul, the birth of my son, the delight of my heart (Glory), beautiful, smiling, pure in heart, beautiful in appearance, light-hearted. Your birth in heaven is sweeter, my heart.”

Airwars found Majd’s name amongst the list of fatalities released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health on July 24, 2024.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:
