Airwars assessment

During the night of November 4, 2023, at least 48 people were killed, including infants and children, and dozens were injured in an alleged Israeli bombardment of the Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp located in Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip.

That day, @ShehabAgency reported that “a number of martyrs and injuries were transferred in the targeting of two homes for the Samaan and Al-Muzain family in the Al-Salahat roundabout area in Al-Maghazi camp in the central Gaza Strip. So far, 10 martyrs and 40 wounded” and shared videos and images of the casualties, including a baby, arriving at a hospital following the alleged Israeli attack.  Other sources including Gaza Now and Facebook user Khalil Al Faqawe specified that the Semaan and Al-Muzain family homes had been “targeted” resulting in “more than 40 martyrs.” It is possible more than two homes were hit; Facebook user Rajab Saed alleged three homes had been struck. The Rafah Health Administration shared a video of multiple injured children being treated at a hospital and reported that “a large number of serious injuries piled up on the floor in the emergency department of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital as a result of the Al-Maghazi camp massacre.” According to BBC News, “the Al-Maghazi camp is in the area where Israel advised people in the north of Gaza to evacuate to for safety as they continue their campaign to destroy Hamas in retaliation for its 7 October attacks on Israel. However, air strikes in the south have not stopped.”

Journalist Hassan Eslieh tweeted a video of rescue crews combing through extensive piles of rubble in a residential area, describing the footage as “scenes from the massacre in Al-Maghazi camp, committed by the [Israeli military] in the central Gaza Strip last night, which resulted in more than thirty martyrs and dozens of wounded.” @EekadFacts tweeted a photo of at least 13 body bags lined up inside a makeshift morgue and reported that “the [Israeli] forces committed a new massacre in Al-Maghazi camp after destroying an entire residential block, resulting in 41 martyrs, a large number of whom were children.” According to Green Future, “in the early hours of Sunday morning, the details of the massacre committed by the [Israeli] forces last night against civilians in the Maghazi camp…began to emerge. The number…rose to 45 martyrs, most of whom were women and children, according to what a medical source reported, while the camp residents confirmed that the number is much higher due to their inability so far to remove the rubble of the houses that were crowded with citizens and displaced persons.” According to Al Qahera News, “Bashir Jabr, Al-Qahira News correspondent in Khan Yunis, reported that the occupation aircraft targeted the house of the Semaan family in Al-Maghazi Camp; which resulted in the martyrdom of more than 50 martyrs and the injury of others, most of whom were women and children.” Facebook user Mouhsen Abu Mosameh alleged even higher injury tolls, reporting “100”.

According to CNN, “the Ministry of Health in Gaza said 47 people were killed [and] the director of communications at the Al-Aqsa hospital, Mohammad al Hajj, told CNN the explosion was the result of an Israeli airstrike. Later Sunday, the hospital’s director, Dr Eyad Abu Zaher, said 52 people had been killed, differing from the health ministry’s figure. ‘One of the houses in the camp was struck. This house was crowded with residents. Its residents were bombed while they were safe in their homes,’ added head of nursing Dr. Khalil Al-Daqran.”

On social media, numerous people highlighted the human cost of the alleged Israeli attack. Facebook user Fatima Ezzahra Rifai wrote “another massacre in Al-Maghazi camp and targeting residential areas, however, we will not get used to the scene of a movie and our hearts and eyes will not get used to the scenes and tragedies left by the massacres that preceded it. The majority of the martyrs and wounded are children and women as usual…33 martyrs, including 12 children, in Al-Maghazi camp. They are not numbers. 33 lives. 33 stories. 33 ambitions.” Ameer Halawa announced on Facebook that “Gaza is being destroyed. A massacre in Al-Maghazi refugee camp [resulted in] 70 martyrs at the hands of [Israeli forces] a short while ago. Most of them were children who were sleeping and were assassinated by the sinful hand of treachery…Children no older than six years old. The youngest of them is 10 days old.” Facebook user Ammar Zain posted that “Israeli [military] aircraft bombed three houses over the heads of their residents. More than 40 martyrs have been killed so far” and shared a photo of rows of body bags and the uncovered bodies of five children and babies. Nadia Nada, Alhamri Tawakul Al’iihtiatii and others shared a clip of a Palestinian Red Crescent worker holding a dead baby in his arms following the bombing. Mourning the victims, Dr-Loghlam Azzouz shared photos of the same babies and children.

Numerous loved ones expressed their grief online, which helped Airwars gather a list of named victims.

The Al-Aloul Family

Many people offered their condolences to journalist Mohammed al-Aloul, a photographer for Anadolu Agency, who lost many of his family members in the alleged Israeli bombing. Mohammed lost four children: Ahmed Mohammed al-Aloul (13 years old), Rahaf Mohammed al-Aloul (11 years old), Kinan Mohammed al-Aloul (six years old), and Qais Mohammed al-Aloul (four years old) as well as his brothers Atef Jamal al-Aloul (41 years old), Kamal Jamal al-Aloul (37 years old), Ahmed Jamal al-Aloul (31 years old) and sister Sujoud Jamal al-Aloul (28 years old). Mohmmad’s wife (name unavailable) and son Adam Mohammed al-Aloul were injured. Atef’s daughter Razan Atef al-Aloul (15 years old) and sons Jamal Atef Jamal al-Aloul (five years old) and Ahmed Atef Jamal al-Aloul were also killed. In an interview with the BBC, Mohammed said “it did not occur to me that my children might be buried under the rubble…I wish I had been with them and been killed with them.”

In a Facebook post, Journalist Muthana Najjar wrote “my dear, beloved friend, journalist Mohammed Al-Aloul, photographer for Anadolu Agency, is grieving the martyrdom of four of his children in the Maghazi raid. How difficult it is to be at work and carry your children despite their need for teasing, joy and play, but he carries them to bury them.” Muthana also shared photos of his friend wearing his bulletproof ‘press’ vest while carrying the shrouded bodies of his family members in his arms. According to Alhaya.ps, Mohammed was away “covering events at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis” when the bombing of his family home occurred. Ahmed Abedallaha expressed sadness that Mohammed was left “grieving the death of four of his children and four of his brothers in the Maghazi raid while he was on the job.” Somaya AbuEita, writing of Mohammed’s loss, lamented “The oppression of men!” and decried that “Two of [Mohammed’s] children are among the missing under the rubble, while he is stuck here in Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, unable to move to his home at night because of the bombing… and his children are under the rubble!” Al Sharq Alan and Khabar24 News shared photos of Mohammed cradling his dead and injured family, while Ahmad Adris shared a photo of Mohammed being handed the deceased body of his infant son and asked that “ God give you patience, Mohammed.” On November 13,  Ba2louza Reviews posted two photos of Adam al-Aloul, a toddler, documenting that he had recovered.  The caption offered a prayer for his continued well-being: “May God protect you, preserve you, and keep you smiling forever, God willing. Amen.”

Facebook user EL Gentel mourned many of the Al-Aloul family members as well, writing that “I offer my condolences to myself and my dear relatives, the martyrs of the Maghazi massacre from my family and relatives, the Al-Aloul family while Abdel Rahman Abujayyab shared a photo of “our friend Kamal Al-Aloul” who “passed away with his family, brothers and about 40 other people in a treacherous bombing of their safe homes in our beloved camp”.  Abdel Rahman was censorious: “The massacres are still ongoing, and the criminal killer is still at large, supported by those near and far. May God have mercy on our martyrs, and shame and disgrace to the terrorist [Israeli military], the conspirators and the slackers.” Kholod Mohammed and Eslam Radwan also shared the tragic news that “Sujoud and her family are in the hospitality of the Most Gracious.”

The Abu Mailiq, Owimer and Abu Zaher Families

On Facebook, Alkhal Abu Mohammad grieved the loss of his friends Younis Abu Mailiq (33 years old), Hamed Abu Mailiq (21 years old), Abdullah Abu Mailiq (23 years old), and Jihad Owimer (27 years old), as well as the three al-Aloul brothers, Atef, Ahmed and Kamal, acknowledging that “you have hurt my heart with your departure. My friends are in the hospitality of the Most Gracious.” Ahmed Ragheb mourned the deaths of Younis, Kamal, Jihad and Wisam Owimer (33 years old), referring to the men as “children of the neighborhood” who shared “one memory, one story” and “many laughs” He shared a collage of smiling photos of the deceased as well.

Many loved ones honoured the young lawyer, Younis Abu Mailiq. Facebook user Abdallah Qatuwn posted a photo of Younis in a suit while sitting at a desk with the Palestinian flag in the foreground. He expressed his sorrow over Younis’ death, writing “the eye sheds tears, the heart grieves, and we are truly saddened by your departure…May God have mercy on you, my beloved, my brother, and my dear friend / Younis Abu Mailiq.” The Palestinian Bar Association Gaza posted an “obituary of the martyr, lawyer Younis Abu Mailiq” and mourned “the martyrdom of our colleague…as a result of the brutal [Israeli] bombing of the Gaza Strip.” The General Forum of Lawyers – Gaza prayed for “mercy to the souls of all the martyrs and mercy to the dear friend Younis Abu Mailiq” and announced that another person was still missing, saying, “I saw my friend and colleague Alaa Abu Jabal a few days ago and he told me that he was with my friend Younis Abu Mailiq, so anyone who has information about my friend Alaa Abu Jabal, please let us know.” Amro Isam shared a smiling photo of Younis and mourned “the martyrdom of our cousin, the lawyer / Younis Musa Abu Mailiq (Abu Adam)” praying “may God have mercy on you, O father of a kind heart…how beautiful your face is, how splendid” Amar Saeed shared a photo of Younis as well and wrote “my friend and colleague, the lawyer Younis Abu Mailiq, was martyred.” On November 9, the Maghazi Municipality offered its “condolences and sympathy” for Younis’ passing, writing that “the son of the [Municipality’s] former financial director, colleague Musa Abu Mailiq, passed away as a result of the [Israeli] attack on the Maghazi camp. Sincere condolences to his father and family.”

Mohammed ALawour shared charming photos of Abdullah Yahia Abu Mailiq (23 years old), Hamed Yahia Abu Mailiq (21 years old) and Mennat Yahia Abu Mailiq (age unavailable), writing that “our martyrs are with Allah, the martyrs of the massacre, the survivors of the defeat, the happy with what Allah has given them from His grace”. Mohammed honoured Abdullah’s memory, implying he was soon to be married and would now only “have his wedding in […] paradise.” He remembered Hamed as a “fast and skilled basketball player,” and Mennat as an “outstanding student in her studies” who was hoping to study medicine after graduating from high school. He shared photographs of the siblings, showing Abdullah in formal wear, Mennat in an embroidered outfit, and Hamed playing basketball. Helal Alghwash also announced “the martyrdom of my cousins Abdullah, Hamed and Mennat Allah Yahya Abu Mailiq” and lamented their passing: “by God, it’s too early, my cousins. By God, your separation is difficult.” Hazem Al Ghussain wrote “I never saw [Abdullah] except he was laughing and smiling at everyone. Hamed Abu Mailiq [was] ambitious, passionate, full of energy, and loved by everyone. May God have mercy on you, young men, and on your sister.” Yaseen Samra shared photos of himself and his childhood friend Hamed over the years, saying “I will never forget you, God willing, I will meet you in heaven. We spent the most beautiful days in the theater days workshops and the theater club, and we made the most beautiful plays. Hamed is passionate and his dream is to be the best basketball player in the world. It is not a loss for God, my love.” Photographs shared included one of the boys in a silly moment, as well as one where Hamed is wearing a medal won at basketball.

On Facebook, Nour Z Thabet grieved the loss of her relatives, including “my dear and beloved cousin” Jihad Owimer, “my uncle’s wife and our second mother, the kind-hearted, compassionate one, my beloved aunt” Ibtisam Owimer (53 years old), “Jihad’s wife, the love of my heart” Suha Suleiman (27 years old), “Jihad’s dear children” Rakan Owimer (four years old), Dima Owimer (3 years old), and Mohammad Owimer, “my aunt Awatif’s children” Menna Naeem Abu Zaher (18 years old), Mays Naeem Abu Zaher (15 years old), and Obaida Naeem Abu Zaher (17 years old). They would, she stressed, “meet in heaven.” Salsabeel Id shared a beautiful photo of Menna and Mays smiling at the camera, both bathed in golden light, and remembered the sisters as “martyrs.”

The Semaan and Murad Families

Nimr Atia Semaan (50 years old), his wife Asmaa Semaan (age unavailable), and their children Ahmed Nimr Atia Semaan (six years old), Hamza Nimr Atia Semaan (24 years old), Doaa Nimr Atia Semaan (15 years old), and Mohammed Nimr Atia Semaan (22 years old) were killed in the alleged Israeli strike, along with Ibrahim Atia Semaan (51 years old), his wife Samah Rabhi Hassan Mahdi and their granddaughters Wateen Ahmed Ibrahim Semaan (two years old) and Nisreen Ahmed Ibrahim Semaan (four years old). Ibrahim and Samah’s son Ahmed Ibrahim Atia Semaan was injured.

Airwars researchers found four further names of civilians that may have been killed from this family in the records of Shireen Monitor, a Palestinian organisation documenting names of civilians killed. Bissan Ibrahim Atia Semaan (22 years old), Alaa Ibrahim Atia Semaan (20 years old), Aseel Ibrahim Atia Semaan (16 years old), Asraa Ibrahim Atia Semaan (27 years old) and Aya Ibrahim Atia Semaan (18 years old) were reported killed on 5 November, 2023 in Deir al-Balah. While it is possible these were daughters of Ibrahim and Samah, it was not explicitly mentioned anywhere in available sources that they were killed in this strike. The location mentioned was not specific enough to allow Airwars to confidently link these names to this incident, and as such they will not be included in the victims list, though this will be updated should more information emerge. These names were also found on the Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza.

Nour Mahmoud Al Madhon honored the family members by praying “may Allah reward you greatly, my mother, for the martyrdom of your cousins, their wives and their children. May Allah reward you greatly, Umm Diaa, for the martyrdom of your sisters, their wives and their children […] Their house was bombed while they were sleeping in Al-Maghazi camp.” Abu Ahamad similarly mourned Asmaa, Nimr, and their children’s deaths “with great sadness and sorrow and hearts that believe in Allah’s will and destiny.”

Mohammed Sama’an wrote that “the caravans of martyrs do not pass in vain…what passes is tyranny. With all pride, honor, loftiness and dignity, we mourn a new group of martyrs who are more honorable than all of us[…] in a hideous massacre committed by the [Israeli forces]…by bombing their homes while they were sleeping in the Maghazi camp.” He was condemnatory, writing that “the blood of innocent children and women will remain a curse that haunts the silent Arab and Islamic governments and peoples.” Ahmed M Mahdi, Mohamed J Mahdi and Haneen Mahdi paid tribute to these family members as well, while Abo Ahmed Mahdi posted a smiling photo of Ahmed Ibrahim Atia Semaan and prayed “for the recovery of my nephew Ahmed Semaan, who is now in intensive care at the European Hospital”.

Announcing “the martyrdom of all my family members and relatives in the Al-Maghazi massacre,” Doaa Enaim wrote “goodbye my dear ones goodbye” to Madin Murad or “Abu Mahmoud Murad” (57 years old), his wife Abeer Othman al-Khateeb (53 years old), their son Mahmoud Madin Murad (age unavailable), their daughters Hanin Madin Murad (18 years old), Yazan Madin Murad (14 years old), and Areej Madin Murad (28 years old) and Areej’s two daughters Nasreen and Wateen (the aforementioned granddaughters of Ibrahim and Samah). 26-year-old Ragheb Mahmoud Murad, likely another son of Madin and Abeer, was also reported killed. The Murads were residents of Al-Bureij camp, seemingly displaced to Al-Maghazi. They were reported to have been killed in full, as reported by several sources. Facebook users Tota Fouad and Ahmed Al Moslman both announced severe casualties, with Tota writing: “Officially I announce the martyrdom of my cousin and her entire family” Dalal Shaheen corroborated “the martyrdom of all members of my uncle’s family in full” while Maha Mortaga remembered her “childhood friend [and] neighbor” Abeer Ragheb Al-Khatib [Murad]” as well as “her husband and her entire family.” Hend Ragheb El Khateb mourned the loss of Abeer as well, describing “the martyrdom of my sister, her husband and her entire family” and sharing a series of beautiful, smiling photos of the deceased. On November 10, Nedaa Wael called for “a prayer for the martyrs [of the Murad family] on Friday. Oh God, on Friday, have mercy on those whose separation my mind is unable to comprehend and my heart hurts when I repeat a prayer for them.”

Iman Nehad provided one of the most detailed accounts of the alleged Israeli strike and its civilian toll with a lengthy post on Facebook. Describing Al-Maghazi as a once “beautiful neighborhood,” Iman spoke to the scale of casualties, reporting that “14 moons [loved ones] from my family and 52 – though the number is increasing – from our neighbors” were killed “in a hideous and unjust strike on our safe residential block crowded with displaced people in the middle of Al-Maghazi camp.”

According to Iman’s account, on “Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 10 pm, we did not feel any sound of an explosion or even an alarm or warning, we only felt as if the sky was raining stones, shrapnel and glass over our homes, penetrating them and destroying them, as if we were in a race to survive. The doors of the rooms were closed on us and the smoke of the missiles was the outlet!! We saw death with our own eyes and this time the view of our house was different, it was overlooking my uncle Abu Jihad’s house. This time we saw my uncle’s house razed to the ground and next to it dozens of houses that had become piles of stones. I realized then that my uncle’s house and I were one family and we were separated from each other at bedtime, but this time this unjust terrorism that kills everyone we love and everything beautiful has eaten our souls.” Iman then wrote, “goodbye my dear ones, goodbye a lot” and honoured various family members, starting with her aunt Ibtisam Owimer, whom she described as “my second mother […] a symbol of love.”  Remembering Jihad, Iman explained that “we were raised together, we grew up together, we studied together, everything was the same, he was a brother to us”.

According to Iman, “Hamed Alsagheer, a 10-day-old child, had a birth notification and was not registered in the civil registry and is now among the dead.” Highlighting the pattern of tragic losses in her family, Iman further explained that “my dear aunt Awatif Abu Owimer […] went on a treatment trip before these horrific massacres and left her three children as a trust for us.” These were “the bride” Meena, whose death, Iman wrote, “broke my soul”, as well as Mays, a “first-year university student” and the “kind and helpful” Obaida, still in high school. Iman mourned that her aunt would “return from traveling” to find her three children dead “as a result of this horrific strike” and asked that “God give [her] patience while she is away from you and comfort her.”  Iman emphasised the innocence of the deceased: “They did nothing in their lives except that they were kind, affectionate, laughing, playing and innocent.” She had loved them, Iman acknowledged, “very much” and was “pained” by their loss.

Iman also prayed for her “cousin Wissam Abu Owimer” asking that “ God have mercy on you and accept you.” Honoring her relative Younes Abu Mailiq, she wrote that “the whole neighbourhood talks about your chivalry when you opened your home to the displaced and served people by delivering water to their homes”. She hoped that these deeds would be remembered in an afterlife: “This was the last work, God willing, that will bear witness for you before God, you and the youth of the neighborhood and those who ascended from our neighbors and our people, the Semaan, Shaqura, and Al-Aloul families. You were the best neighbors and people.” Iman also shared photos of the deceased, including a number of children.

While Al Jazeera Arabic alleged “raids” caused the destruction and numerous sources alleged airstrikes, Facebook user “ajil alan filastin” pointed to “artillery shells”.

Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, most names were matched to the second ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on January 7th, 2024. Two individuals were found on subsequent lists: Dima Owimer was found on the fourth list, released April 30th, 2024 and Jamal Atef Jamal al-Aloul was found on the fifth list, released June 30, 2024.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.

The incident occured during the night.
