Airwars assessment

Shortly before 1:33 PM on November 4, 2023, 65-year-old Jamal Masoud Abu Dhahir and his infant granddaughter Sela Mahmoud Jamal Abu Dhahir – who was less than a year old – were killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike on their family home in the Al-Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City in the Gaza Strip. Sources reported that others were also injured in the incident.

On the day of the alleged strike, Quds News reported that “[Israeli] aircraft targeted homes and civilian facilities in the Al-Sabra neighborhood” and shared a video of residents frantically running through smoke and debris toward the site of the bombing.

According to @ShehabAgency, “[Israeli] aircraft targeted a house for the Abu Dhahir family in the Al-Sabra neighborhood…and there were a number of martyrs and wounded at the place.” Other sources reported this as well. On Facebook, ِAl Sahafi Ahmed Qudieh announced “the martyrdom of Sila Mahmoud Abu Dhahir and Jamal Masoud Abu Dhahir in the bombing of their home in the Sabra neighborhood in Gaza.”

Loved ones shared their grief on social media. Mohammed Zuhdi Abo Zuhir prayed “may God have mercy on you, my uncle Jamal Abu Dhahir (Abu Muhammad), a martyr.” Rasha Zuhdi and Masoud Hekal mourned the death of their “uncle Jamal Masoud Abu Dhahir” as well.

Both Jamal and Sela have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names were matched to the third ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on April 1st, 2024.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces.
