Airwars assessment

On the 5th of November 2023, an alleged Israeli bombardment hit the Saad family house in the Al-Alami area, in Jabalia Refugee Camp, in North Gaza, the Gaza strip. The incident reportedly caused several injuries and at least two deaths within the Hawila family, who were renting the Saad family house, and 46-year-old Mohi El-Din Hawila has been identified by name as killed in the attack.

Following the incident, many sources reported the efforts of Civil Defense and Medical services crews to recover the bodies of those injured and killed in the reported airstrike. Most of these sources included pictures portraying the rescue and medical crews uncovering people from the rubble. In some of the pictures, the civilians are able to walk on their own with some support, while in others, a body is seen being carried out on an ambulance stretcher. At least three people can be seen injured in the photographs.

Family and friends mourned the deaths of their loved ones. Taiysier Abu Tareq mourned that his “cousin Mohi El-Din Hawila and his family were martyred” and asked that “God have mercy on them and accept them”. He included a picture of Mohi El-Din. While several sources reported “two martyrs”, that Taiysier Abu Tareq mourned the entirety of the Hawila family signals that the death toll could be higher.

Salah Jaber, a nephew, shared similar sentiments, asking that “God give us patience for your loss, uncle” and reaffirmed a belief that “To God we belong and to Him we shall return”. He posted another picture of Mohi El-Din wearing a black long-sleeved shirt sitting smiling next to a young boy. Additionally, Hasan Hawila wrote that with their deaths, “souls and lives [were] sacrificed for Palestine” and expressed a wish that “Palestine be liberated”.

Mohi El-Din Hawila was matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released seven lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, Mohi was matched to the fifth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on June 30, 2024.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to the Israeli military.

Reports of the incident mention a residential building being struck in the Al-Alami area (العلمي) within the Jabalia Refugee Camp (مخيم جباليا). Analysing audio-visual material from sources, we have narrowed the location down to the following exact coordinates: 31.535339, 34.501842.
