Airwars assessment
During noon prayers on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at least one man was killed and at least four others, including children, were injured by an alleged Israeli drone strike on the courtyard of Al-Da’wa Mosque in Nuseirat Refugee Camp, in the central Gaza Strip.
On Facebook, Alghad TV recounted “a number of displaced persons injured” while Raslan Ashour reported “injuries at the scene and talk of martyrs.”
Sources identified 35-year-old Dawood Suleiman Ashour, also known as Abu Suleiman, among the victims of the attack. His cousins, Ahmed Ashour and Hesham Ashour, shared their grief following his death in a Facebook post. As stated by them, Dawoud was killed “while he was performing ablution” for the Dohr prayer. According to his own Facebook account, Dawoud had been married since 2019 to Eman Suwan with whom he had a 3 year old child, likely named Suleiman. He was a civil engineer from Gaza City who formerly worked for several organizations, including Zawaya Design, UNRWA, the Gaza municipality, and Babel for Engineering Consulting. He attended Al-Karmel secondary school and graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza. In pictures shared on his socials and by relatives, Dawoud appears with greying hair.
Adelzourob73 reported that the attack occurred as people were preparing for the “noon prayer” aligning with Safa PS’s claims that the attack took place at around 12:18 p.m. (local time). Alhadath PS and @Fatma_Kh_ both stated that Al-Da’wa mosque was bombed with a reconnaissance missile “while people were preparing for ablution.” The missile reportedly landed in the square of the mosque’s courtyard. According to Waeediraq, the mosque was said to shelter “displaced people in the Nuseirat [refugee] camp north of Gaza.”
MsdrNews mentioned in a Facebook post that the victims were brought to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital after the incident. A video shared by @wa3ediq on Twitter/X shows at least four injured people, including children, being carried from an emergency vehicle of the Palestine Red Crescent Society at the hospital gates.
Dawood was matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released seven lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, Dawood was matched to the third ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on April 1st, 2024.
Where sources identified a belligerent, all attributed responsibility to the Israeli military.
The incident occured around midday.
