Airwars assessment
Three young men from the Abu al-Omrain family were reportedly killed in an alleged Israeli airstrike on the Gaza Strip on 5th/6th November 2023. The three men reported to have been killed in the incident were named by family members as 28-year-old Mohammed Fayez Abu al-Omrain; Ibrahim Fahmy Abu al-Omrain, also aged 28 and 24-year-old software engineer and website designer Idris Abdel Nasser Abu al-Omrain.
Numerous tributes to the men were posted on social media by mourning relatives and friends. Kamal Saad wrote of the men on Facebook, “How painful is the heart for their separation. May God have mercy on you, my beloved, and grant us patience for your separation. Goodbye, the best of youth.”
Meanwhile, Abu Maher mourned Mohammed Fayez Abu al-Omrain, describing him as “The teacher, brother and friend, the dove of the Baghdad Mosque”, and asking, “May God have mercy on you, my beloved heart.” He added an image of the late Muhammed – a young man with a beard dressed in a white shirt and a beige coat posing with the seaside in the background.
Idris Abdel Nasser Abu al-Omrain was engaged to be married. Mostafa Mohammed al-Afifi asked, “May God have mercy on your pure soul and accept you, O Lord of the Worlds”, adding, “give patience to all loved ones. We will meet in Heaven, God willing… Enough! The heart breaks every day for the most beautiful young man. You were waiting for your joy and wedding, groom. But God chose you to be His groom. May God have mercy on you, Idris.” Mostafa added an image of Idris, a smiling young man with styled dark hair and a dark trimmed beard dressed in a long-sleeved grey shirt, holding a mobile phone in his hands. Mohammed Nasser further described Idris Abdel Nasser Abu al-Omrain as “Our groom and moon of our home”.
Wasem Fadel also mourned the loss of Idris Abdel Nasser Abu al-Omrain through a Facebook post, writing, “Brother, friend and neighbor, Idris Abu Al-Omrain, may you rest in eternal peace. May God have mercy on your soul. I swear that I bear witness to your good treatment and morals. May God accept you and make your abode in Paradise.”
On 20th December 2023, the English-language Twitter/X page ”Martyrs of Gaza” published a post remembering Idris Abdel Nasser Abu al-Omrain, including a tribute from his cousin. They wrote, “Idris was an electronics engineer, working in website design. He was elegant and remarkably distinctive, committed to deadlines, and everything about him was beautiful.“ His colleague and friend, Shatha Jaber Qarmout, said, “Idris, my cousin, my friend, and my colleague at work, was a brave, noble, ambitious, hardworking, polite, satisfied, and gentle young man. He loved life very much. We had plans to come to Egypt and work on a project together. Who will guide me? Who will support me? When I’m upset, to whom shall I go?”
No sources indicated where exactly the strike occurred within the Gaza Strip. According to the Shireen Observatory, Ibrahim and Idris may have been killed in Deir-Al-Balah. According to the source Genocide in Palestine, they may have been killed in Gaza City. Airwars will abstain from indicating the exact location of the strike until further information comes to light. Reports of the death of the men began surfacing on social media on November 5th, but Martyrs of Gaza stated that Idris was killed on November 6th.
Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars matches individuals to the first list where their names appeared. The names of those killed in the incident have been matched to the Second and Third Palestinian Ministry of Health lists of fatalities in Gaza released respectively on January 7, 2024 and April 1, 2024.
Only one source, “Martyrs of Gaza”, directly attributed the strike to the Israeli military. However, as the names of the victims have been matched with the Ministry of Health Liist of Fatalities which explicitly mentions the deaths resulting from Israeli action, Airwars has graded the strike status as “likely strike.”
The local time of the incident is unknown.
The victims were named as:
