Airwars assessment

At dawn on Monday, November 6th, 2023, at least four civilians, including children with cancer, were reportedly killed and at least 70 others were injured, including displaced people and children, when an alleged Israeli strike hit the third floor of Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital in Gaza City, where reports indicate the cancer analysis and diagnosis department is located. A number of children killed were reportedly cancer patients.

Multiple sources quoted the Ministry of Health in Gaza which reported that eight people had been killed and 125 other “medical staff, patients and displaced persons” had been injured at Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital as well as multiple other medical facilities in Gaza – the sources did not specify how many of these casualties occurred in Al-Rantisi specifically.

Following the incident, several news outlets and social media users, including 5 News Pal and Pal Info, reported on X/Twitter that five people had been killed and others injured “including children with cancer” while a tweet from @abulhafi put the death toll at seven. A tweet from @mahmoudem2000 specified that children were amongst those killed in the hospital. Facebook user, Imam Saada Abu Tala reported “dozens of wounded” in addition to four killed while a tweet from @alharf28_28 specified that “4 displaced persons were killed and 70 displaced persons and patients were injured in the Oncology Center.”

An image shared by “Danny” Facebook account showed at least two small children who had been injured and were treated in a hospital.

Reports indicate that the explosion occurred on the third floor of the building, causing severe infrastructural damage. Photos shared by Facebook user Momen M Zeineddin depicted a large blackened hole through the window and wall of the top floor of the building; another shows the inside of the hospital, and the floors are covered with dust and bits of rubble and the equipment is in disarray. The caption identifies the images as being of the ‘Hematology and Oncology Department at Al-Rantisi Children’s Hospital.’ Ammon News reported that the deaths and injuries occurred “in conjunction with the cutting off of communication and internet services in the Strip.”

In an image shared by @JordanWord_NEWS, search and rescue teams are depicted carrying a young boy through the rubble and down the stairs of an almost totally decimated building. In another photo shared by @livequds, a bright orange sky and a billow of smoke rise up from an explosion in the city.

A video shared by Twitter/X user @k1a9l9d6 showed the moment the strike hit the hospital and a huge cloud of smoke was rising, while a video shared by @TRTArabi showed the holes from shrapnel in ambulances and the broken window glass and furniture.

Based on the images of the incident and references to death tolls, Airwars has estimated a casualty range of between four and seven for this incident with at least two child fatalities. Should further information about the victims come to light Airwars will update the assessment.

Where sources identified the belligerent, all sources attributed the strikes to Israeli forces. Posting on X/Twitter Jordan TV reported on the “violent explosions and unprecedented shelling” at dawn of the hospital while other sources specified that the bombing was carried out by aircraft.

The incident occured around dawn.
