At dawn on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, an alleged airstrike by the Israeli military hit the Asraf family house in the Ma’an area of Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip. The incident reportedly resulted in at least nine civilian casualties, including two men, two women – among them an elderly woman – and five children. Seven of those killed were members of the Jarghon family. Injured individuals were transported to the European Hospital from the scene.
34-year-old Alaa Nasr Nadi Jarghoun was killed alongside his 27-year-old wife Hidaya Hussein Muhammad al-Ghalban and their four children: six-year-old daughter Ayat Alaa Nasr Jarghoun, five-year-old son Baraa Alaa Nasr Jarghoun, three-year-old son Hamza Alaa Nasr Jarghoun, and an infant son Nasr Alaa Nasr Jarghoun. Alan’s mother, 74-year-old Subhiya Khalil Salem Jarghoun was also killed, as was three-year-old Akram Ayman Muhammad al-Masry and 58-year-old Riyad Juma Hamdan al-Brahma.
Journalists widely covered the incident on social media. Ahmed Qudaih posted on Facebook that “8 citizens from the Jarghoun family were killed in the bombing of a house belonging to the Asraf family in the Maan area, east of Khan Yunis.” Adel Zaarab added, “Targetting the house of the Asraf family in Ma’an, Khan Yunis, resulted in the death of 9 martyrs, 7 of them from the Jarghoun family, who had sought refuge with the Asraf family.” Additionally, @ShehabAgency on Twitter/X added, “Follow-up: A house belonging to the Asref family was targeted in the Ma’an area of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.”
Social media users also added more context about the incident online – Iman Hardeey posted a video on Facebook showing injuries being brought to a hospital, stating, “During the early hours and until now, the death toll has reached 27 martyrs during airstrikes targeting homes in Khan Younis, which led to the death of 8 citizens from the Jarghon family in the bombing of the Asraf family home in the Maan area, as well as injuries in the bombing that targeted a home near the Al-Qarara police station, northeast of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.” Ahmad Hamood added, “#Urgent | 8 martyrs from the Jarghon family arrived at the European Hospital as a result of targeting the Asraf family’s house in the Ma’an area east of Khan Yunis.”
Relatives of the Jarghon family, posted tributes on Facebook for family members lost in the incident. Doaa Jarghon shared – “Oh my heart aches for you, aunt, My aunt, her son, his wife and her children are martyrs” and asked that her aunt be taken “to God’s mercy.” Om Qusay remembered his aunt and uncle, Alaa and Hidaya, asking that “God have mercy” on them and “make [their] abode in heaven”. Their children, Om Qusay stressed, were now “in God’s care”.
Similarly, Rafaat Ahmad Jarghoun also added “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. We mourn the martyrdom of my aunt, Subhiya Khalil Jarghoun (Halima Umm Fakhri), her martyr son Alaa, his wife and his (4) children, who were killed in an attack by the [Israeli army’s] aircraft on their home. To the eternal gardens with the prophets, the truthful and the martyrs. To God we belong and to Him we shall return.”
The Al-Ghalban Youth Forum shared on Facebook that a funeral prayer for Hidaya Hussein Mohammed (Jarghon) al-Ghalban, and her deceased husband and their children was hosted at the Indonesian Mosque.
Where possible, names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023 the MoH has released six lists, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024.
