On November 11, 2023, the Hamdan’s family house, located near the Mujahideen Mosque in the Al-Ma’askar area west of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, was reportedly struck in an alleged Israeli bombing, killing a five-year-old girl named Maria Muhammad al-Assar and injuring at least two other civilians.
Multiple sources, including @ShehabAgency and Hani Alshaer Post, reported “one death and two injuries” or “a citizen was killed and two neighbors…were injured” in the strike. Journalist Ahmed Qadih specifically identified the killed citizen as Maria Muhammad al-Assar.
Maria Muhammad al-Assar’s profile on the website “Genocide in Gaza” claimed that the Hamdan’s family house where she was staying was housing a number of displaced persons and was attacked without prior warning. The profile featured an image of the late Maria who is seen holding her index finger up.
Several other sources, such as CoffeeShop Post, Rabab Abu Hatab Post, Awdeh Plus Post, @AlarabyTV, @qudsfeed_brk, @Almasirahbrk, @hosam_press, and @Nfahatalaqsa, consistently corroborated “a martyr and two injured” or “a martyr and two injured neighbors” arriving at Nasser Hospital following the targeting of the Hamdan family home.
Maria’s name has been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Since October 26, 2023, the MoH has released a number of lists of victims, along with an additional list of medical professionals, which was released on September 17, 2024. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, the name of the victim was matched to the second Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza list that was released on January 7, 2024.
All reports implicitly or explicitly attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
