Airwars assessment
A declared Israeli airstrike struck tents for internally displaced persons in the al-Masawi area of Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip on November 13, 2024. At least two civilians were killed: Amir Hussam Fayez Abu Taha, 14 years old; and Ahmed Raafat Ahmed al-Jamal, 21 years old. While at least one local source reported that four others were injured, the majority of others referenced “more than 20 other” injuries.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement on their @idfofficial Telegram account that “the IAF struck and dismantled a loaded launcher located in the humanitarian area in the southern Gaza Strip,” adding that “Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including issuing numerous advance warnings to the civilian population in the area to evacuate, as well as the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance.” The statement also claimed that “Secondary explosions were identified following the strike, indicating that there was a large amount of weaponry at the launch site.”
A tweet from @AJABreaking reported an “urgent” report that “A child was killed and more than 20 people were injured in an Israeli bombardment on the Al-Mawasi area.” The Palestinian Center for Human Rights provided the names of two people killed in the strike, writing “At approximately 10:00, an Israeli helicopter attacked the tents of the displaced people southwest of Mawasi, Khan Younis, killing a child and a young man and wounding 4 others.”
A video posted by local sources including @hassaneslayeh, and later verified by The New York Times, captured the moment a bomb struck the tent camp – a bomb can be seen dropping from the sky, resulting in a large explosion and hundreds of civilians running in panic from the site of the blast. The video also shows the aftermath of the strike, where only burnt-out shells of tents remain in the areas surrounding the massive building-sized crater in the sand caused by the bomb. Civilians can then be seen sorting through the burnt remains of some tents.
Palestinian photojournalist Yousef Hamada (@u.h.gaza on Instagram) filmed the initial video showing the bomb hitting the camp, and according to a Facebook post from Taghrout Mohamed, Yousef Hamada described that moment as “I escaped death”. The post also included a description of the location as “filmed near Al-Attar Street in the Al-Mawasi area” while another post from Alaa Alaa referred to the location as “in the Bir Zenoun area in Mawasi”.
Amir Hussam Fayez Abu Taha was eulogized by Ramy Abomoor as a “prince” with “lightness, presence, and laughter.” The post included a photo of a young boy in a tan tuxedo, and Ramy Aboomoor wished condolences to his sister for her loss, making it possible that Amir was his sister’s son and therefore his nephew.
Ahmed Raafat Ahmed al-Jamal was memorialized by several of his cousins, including Foofo Ebrahem and Ahmet Saad, who both mentioned that Ahmed would join his brother, Fadi, in the afterlife. The post from Foofo Ebrahem included an image of Ahmed’s body wrapped in a white shroud and an image of Ahmed before his death, a young man smiling at the camera.
The New York Times quoted Gabriella Bianchi, a spokeswoman for Doctors Without Borders, who said that one of their clinics, about 250 yards from the strike location in Mawasi, was damaged and some medical equipment was destroyed. According to the spokeswoman, “the aid group had not received any direct warning that a blast was imminent” but that “Residents who received alerts on their phones from the Israeli military did inform the staff, Ms. Bianchi said, but that left only a few minutes to evacuate personnel and hundreds of patients.”
The incident occured at approximately 10:00 am local time.
The victims were named as:

IDF: Earlier today (Wednesday), with the direction of IDF intelligence, the IAF struck and dismantled a loaded launcher located in the humanitarian area in the southern Gaza Strip. The launcher was aimed toward Israeli territory and posed an imminent and immediate threat to Israeli civilians.
Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including issuing numerous advance warnings to the civilian population in the area to evacuate, as well as the use of precise munitions and aerial surveillance.
Secondary explosions were identified following the strike, indicating that there was a large amount of weaponry at the launch site.
The terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip continue to systematically abuse the humanitarian area and civilian infrastructure to carry out terrorist activities and attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops. The IDF will continue to operate against the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip in defense of the State of Israel.
