Around dawn on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, two people were reportedly killed and at least two others injured, following an alleged Israeli drone strike on a tent sheltering displaced persons in the Mawasi al-Qarara area, northwest of Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Multiple sources including Khalefelkatea and Kari reported that the incident took place “on a tent housing displaced persons in the Mawasi al-Qarara area, northwest of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip.” Al Jazeera and @mohammed_jbour among other sources referred to an attack “near the city of Asda, west of Khan Yunis”. According to Hesham Najar the incident occurred “at dawn”.

Safa PS and @AlloLiberte initially announced “One martyr and several others injured” before confirming that two people were killed. @PalTodayBRK cited a statement from the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip claiming to have “recovered two martyrs and three injured” while Khan Younes recorded “two people were killed and two others injured in a fire at a tent”. Voice for Palestine recalls that “a number of injured people” were transported to the Kuwait Specialized Field Hospital following the attack.

Fathi Abdel Qader Abu Shaar, 56, and his son, Yahya Fathi Abdel Qader Abu Shaar, 32/33 years old, were both reportedly killed as a result of the attack. A video shared on Facebook by user Mohammad Alnajjar shows medics attempting to resuscitate Fathi Abdel Qader Abu Shaar, later confirming that “he succumbed to his wounds after intensive attempts to save him”.  According to a Facebook post from “Beloved city of Rafah,” the family was originally from Rafah, but was likely displaced amidst the ongoing conflict. Relatives and friends took to social media to express their grief. Omar Barhoom on Facebook remembered Fathi Abu Shaar, also known as Abu Ibrahim, as a “well-mannered neighbour”. Muratebat Abu Shaar prayed for his aunt’s husband and his son Yahya, who he described as “beloved” and “kind-hearted”. Amro Husain mourned the loss of his “beloved” wife’s uncle in what he described as a “brutal aggression”, similarly to Ziad Abu Shaar, cousin of Fathi Abdul Qader.

In a photo shared on Facebook by Omar Barhoom, Muratebat Abu Shaerm, Um Mohammad, and Qadiya, father and son are seen holding each other. Fathi, the father, a grey-haired man with tanned skin, appears to be slightly shorter than his son, Yahya, who has deep dark hair and eyebrows contrasting with his white vest.

Hesham Najar shared images of the family and community gathered beside the bodies, wrapped in white shrouds, as people bid farewell with final kisses. A woman in a white veil, likely a close relative of the victims, is seen being comforted. It appears that the Qur’an was recited to the victims before the funeral prayers were held.

An image from the incident shared by Alqahera encapsulates the magnitude of the explosion as fire and smoke rise up in the air. While most sources describe the incident as a “drone strike”, others such as Hesham Najar and Mohammad Alnajjar remain vague only mentioning a “missile” or a “bombardment”.

Both names have been matched with the Palestinian Ministry of Health (MoH) lists, which include national ID numbers. Airwars is matching individuals to the first list where their name appeared. In regard to this incident, names are matched to the ninth ‘Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza’ list, which was released on June 23, 2025.

Where sources identified a belligerent, all attributed responsibility to the Israeli military.
