Airwars Assessment
On 18 March 2025, one man was killed and other members of his family, including a woman, were injured in an alleged Israeli attack on Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip.
41-year-old Youssef Mohammed Youssef Abu Jazzar was killed on 18 March 2025, and, according to Zakria Emad Aldeen, the uncle of Youssef’s wife, his wife Zainab al-Sha’er and their daughter Habiba Youssef Mohammed Abu Jazzar and at least one more child were also reportedly injured in the alleged incident, with Zakria sharing on Facebook that “his niece Zainab and her children” were injured.
According to his profile on the website Shireen Monitor, Youssef was killed in Khan Younis. His name was also found on the eighth Palestinian Ministry of Health List of Fatalities in Gaza, released on March 24, 2025
Many family members, including cousins and a brother of Youssef’s, shared their condolences via Facebook. A video shared on a family Facebook page titled Abu Jazar clan official account showed people, presumably family, praying over the body of Youssef. It also appears that a song was posted on Facebook and YouTube in honour of Youssef’s life and death.
However, the local sources alluded that Youssef was a militant. For example, Facebook source Kamal Abu Muhammad wrote about the “Martyrdom of the heroic commander”, and Facebook user Abu Fajjar Abu Jazzar posted Youssef’s image in a military uniform. Umm Habiba Yusuf wrote poetically, addressing the wife of Youssef, “Wife of the martyred, struggling commander, Dr. Yousef Abu Jazar Abu Muhammad, “Yuka”, where Yuka is apparently his military nickname. Based on all this evidence, Airwars considers Youssef a militant and does not count him as a “civilian casualty.”
Details on this incident were limited at the time of writing, but will be updated should new information come to light.
Although the social media sources did not attribute the death of Youssef and the injury of his family members to any belligerent, his name was found on the Palestinian Ministry of Health list and on the website Shireen Monitor, which has the list of “martyrs” of the Israeli aggression from 2023 onwards. As these lists contain the names of the victims of the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip, they are considered an attribution of their deaths to the Israeli military, which makes the strike status of the incident “likely strike.”
