Before 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 21, 2025, an Israeli SkyStriker drone, commonly known as a suicide drone, exploded near a tent sheltering displaced people, reportedly killing at least two, including a woman, and injuring five others. The strike occurred near the Al-Ihsan Mosque, close to the Karza Cafeteria on Roni Street in Al-Mawasi, Khan Yunis.

Dr. Hassan Abdel Rahman Abu Zeid, who was 34 years old, was killed with his wife, 32-year-old Israa Magdy Younis al-Maghari.

The incident was first reported by the Palestinian Press Agency (Safa), which initially stated that one person was killed and five others were injured in the explosion of a “suicide drone.” About an hour later, the same source reported the death in the hospital of a “female citizen” who had sustained wounds in the attack.

Several sources shared images of the aftermath of the attack on social media. In a video posted on the Telegram account The Activist Hamza al-Masri, four men are seen lifting an unconscious man, with a screen of smoke covering the left part of the scene. One of his legs appears to be completely shattered, and his shirt seems to be burned. In the next clip, a body is quickly placed into an ambulance.

Another video from the same scene was posted by Facebook user Eslam Abu Zaid. A large cloud of smoke is visible at the centre of the scene, surrounded by tents. The smoke appears to be rising from within a metal frame, likely the remains of a small shelter. A piece of white canvas still hangs from one corner. Several people are nearby, some calling for help, others covering their mouths and noses from the smoke. A paramedic can be seen giving instructions to a group of men attempting to place a body, wrapped in sheets, onto a stretcher.

The injured man from the previous video is now shown from the opposite angle, revealing more clearly the extent of the damage to his legs. Due to the quality of the footage, it is difficult to describe the injuries with certainty, but he appears to have lost his left leg, while the right seems to be nearly detached. He is then carried away on the stretcher.

Many social media users reacted with sorrow and outrage following the strike, mourning the victims.

According to some of these messages, Hassan Abdel Rahman Abu Zeid was a doctor and lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University. “The man with the sweet laugh”, wrote Ameer Mohammed, in a farewell post for his cousin, Israa Magdy Younis El-Maghari, and her husband. The post was accompanied by a portrait of a smiling Hassan Abdel, wearing a yellow and purple checkered shirt, as well as a photo of his funeral.

User Aya Alfari shared a condolence message for her aunt on Facebook. “May God have mercy on you, Israa, and may God have mercy on your husband and companion”, she wrote.

“Imagine sitting with your brothers and children inside a dilapidated tent, fleeing death, talking and laughing, when suddenly the ground beneath you and the sky above you catch fire, transforming the place into hell.” “It’s the reality of Gaza, repeated over and over again”, lamented Facebook user Eslam Abu Zaid.

The remnant was identified by Airwars and partners at the Armament Research Services; see details in the munition section of this assessment below – it is also recorded on our partner platform the open source munitions portal (OSMP1363).

Where sources identified a belligerent, all sources attributed the strike to Israeli forces.
