Airwars assessment

On July 8th 2024, the body of a young man named Amr Mohamed Shehada al-Barbari was found in the morgue at the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis after being reported missing for 11 days. Sources reported that he had been missing from al-Mawasi camps in Khan Younis, near Fash Farsh, Gaza Strip, since June 21.

The first reports about his disappearance were posted on June 26th by the Facebook page Khan Yunis Post, which stated “Missing since Friday 6/21/2024.” On June 27th, Facebook user Hassan Eslayeh shared Amr’s photo for identification and asked users to provide any available information to his family; “Please, anyone who knows his location or has seen him since Friday, inform us on the following number.”

Eleven days later, on July 8th, 2024, Facebook user Mohamed Awad wrote that Amr was found dead in the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis and asked users to inform his family.

Also on July 8, Facebook user Fadwa Al-Suwaiti wrote, “The body of the martyr Amr Mohamed Shehada al-Barbari has been in the morgue of Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis for two weeks.”

A family member, Facebook user Mohamed Jameel al-Barbari, also reported his death on July 8th, 2024. This was confirmed by his uncle, Facebook user Ahmed al-Barbari, who wrote, “I mourn my nephew, the martyr (Amr Mohamed Shehada al-Barbari) who was martyred in Rafah as a satisfied martyr.”

Amr was born on February 9, 2005, making him 19 years old. Photographs shared to social media show him with short brown hair parted to the right side and big brown eyes.

Amr’s name was found in the Ministry of Health list of fatalities in Gaza, which explicitly mentions that names on the list are “victims of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip” which was released on September 16, 2024. Therefore this incident has been graded as a “single source claim” with regards to attribution.

This case presents one of a number of cases documented by Airwars where an individual has been identified but has not yet been connected to a specific airstrike or explosive event. Airwars’ methodology for categorising and assigning dates for these cases is evolving and will be updated in 2025.

The local time of the incident is unknown.

The victims were named as:
